Pipe flow simulation with line probes
A pipe is simulated in Solidworks to make fluid flow through it at 3 different velocities corresponding to the given Reynold\'s numbers 100,1000 and 10000. Line probes are made at 95%, 90% and 85% to check the cut plots at each of these locations. Velocity comparisons are made to compare the velocities at these cut plots.
Specifications of the pipe :-
Length of pipe = 300mm;
External dia. of pipe = 20mm;
Thickness of pipe = 1mm;
Internal dia. of pipe = 18mm.
Characteristics of the fluid :-
Fluid = Water;
Dynamic Viscosity = 8.90 × 10-4 kg /(m.s);
Density = 1000 kg /(m3).
We know that Reynolds number is given by the formula :-
where
ρ = density of fluid;
V = velocity of fluid;
D = internal dia. of the pipe;
μ = dynamic viscosity of fluid.
From the above equation, we can find out the corresponding velocities according to the given Reynold\'s numbers.
Considering the required values, the velocities calculated are :-
Reynold\'s Number |
Velocity(m/s) |
| 100 | 0.0049444 |
| 1000 | 0.0494444 |
| 10000 | 0.4944444 |
The boundary conditions taken are as follows :-
- Inlet velocity is selected at the inlet of pipe.
- Static Pressure is selected at the outlet of pipe.
- Pipe wall is selected as real wall.
For the Reynold\'s number of 100, cut plots at 285, 270 and 255 are as follows :-
