OPTIMIZATION OF ENGINE FOR VARIOUS INPUT AND OUTPUT PARAMETERS USING GT POWER TOOL

Objective:-

Explore Example- Diesel_4cyl_DIpulse_injratemap

  • Parameters-SOI, Rail Pressure
  • Response- NO and bsfc minimum
  • Run all cases and find the optimum values

Solution:-

Step 1:

  • First we explore the Example file i,e Diesel_4cyl_DIpulse_injratemap and as shown in the below figure.
  • Now we run the model and observe the results.

Inputs:-

Outputs:

  • As we optimize the BSFC,SOI & NOx note down the values before we doing the optimization i,e as follows
    • BSFC = 235.8 g/KW-h
    • SOI = -4.7
    • NOx = 741.96 ppm

What is optimization?

Ans:

The optimization is the process of maximizing of a desired quantity or the minimizing of an undesired one. For example, optimization is often used by the mechanical engineers to achieve either a minimum manufacturing cost or a maximum component life.

DOE(Design Of Experiments):-

Ans:

Design of experiments is nothing but the number of experiments based on the design space and than accordingly we run the number of cases and relation between different different parameter and we do the optimization tries to get those values.

What is difference b/w optimization and DOE

Optimization

As we in the optimization we can directly start with the optimization in order to run the number of experiments based on our search algorithm

DOE

Design of experiments is nothing but the number of experiments based on the design space and than accordingly we run the number of cases and relation between different different parameter and we do the optimization tries to get those values.

  • Now we do the optimization for the above model and target the given parameters.
  • Click on optimization select Design optimizer and select IDO as shown in the below figure.
  • In the dialogue box it has shown some errors that we can eliminate by adding those values as shown below.

  • Here we used Search Algorithm as a Genetic Algorithm because here we used more than one factors.
  • Now we add the Factors i,e SOI and Rail pressure as shown below.
  • Now we add the responses i,e BSFC and Emissions (NO) and as shown below.
  • We have to give the objective as minimize the both.
  • Now the set up is ready for Run and getting the results using the GT-Post

Results:

  • 2D pareto chart for the optimum values as shown below figure.

  • In the above figure we observe the lot of optimum values we get but we have to select the better one i,e if we need better bsfc we compromise with the NOx OR We okay with the BSFC we have to control the Emissions than we select the lower NOx value corresponding we get higher BSFC as shown in the above figure.
  • In the above fiigure shows the SOI v/s Engine Wmission i,e NOx.
  • We get the higher Emissions when we advancing the SOI.
  • As we observe in the above figure SOI timing goes on increasing NOx will gets reduce as much as possible.
  • In the above figure shows the BSFC v/s Rail Pressure.
  • When we increasing in the BSFC goes on higher side as shown in the above picture.
  • We have to taken care about the Rail pressure because if we select the higher rail pressure we never get the beeeter BSFC so we have to select the better Rail pressure in order to get the better BSFC.

View Results:

  • As we see in the above chart Blue color shows the optimum values for the Engine Emissions as well as BSFC.

  • As we see in the above picture SOI v/s Emissions.
  • Intially the injection strat at -10 degree but at time we have higher emissions so that GT understand than it will decreases the advancing of the injection to reduce the engine emissions as shown in the above.
  • obviously as we adavnce the injection engine emissions at higher sides so we have over come that future valve open and closing are very important.

  • In the above figure shows the Rail Pressure v/s Engine Emissions .
  • When we increasing in the Rail pressure the engine emissions goes on higher side as shown in the above picture.
  • We have to taken care about the Rail pressure because if we select the higher rail pressure we never get the lesser emissions so we have to select the better Rail pressure in order to overcome the engine emissions.
  • As we see in the above picture SOI v/s BSFC.
  • Intially the injection strat at -10 degree but at time we have higher BSFC so that GT understand than it will decreases the advancing of the injection to reduce the BSFC as shown in the above.

Contour Plots:

  • The above contour plot gives clear idea about engine BSFC.
  • In the above picture we have different color for the different positions. Blue color region is the suitable for the optimum results i,e around we get BSFC as 229 g/KW-hr.

  • The above contour plot gives clear idea about engine Emissions.
  • In the above picture we have different color for the different positions. Blue color region is the suitable for the optimum results i,e around we get Engine Emissions as 323.4 ppm.

Conclusion:

  • Engine was run before optimization and we noted that values.
  • Engine was run after optimization and we get the results as per our requirements.
