Project

Modelling and simulation of flow through a flowbench

AIM:

To create a 3D model of a flow bench and run flow analysis.

  • To obtain a plot of lift vs mass flow rate.
  • Grid dependence test.
    • For three grids run of simulation at a particular valve lift and explaining the obtained results.
  • Effect of valve lift on mass flow rate.
    • Once the best grid is decided , a parametric sweep is run to show the effect of valve lift on mass flow rate.

PROCEDURE:

The flow bench model with dia of 0.1m and length of cylinder as 0.1m.

The manifold s created by means of using the sweep tool.

A valve of the following dimensions is made.

Using smart dimensions the valce length is varied to enable valve lift.

Using the flow wizard the boundary conditions are specified.

The value for inlet totalpressure is given as 172325pa and outlet static pressure is given as 101325pa.

The flow trajectories are also visualized.

A parametric study is done for various mesh - 2,3,4.

A parametriic study is done for various valve lifts ranging from 0.002 to 0.007.

RESULTS

1. GRID DEPENDENCY TEST

  • Mesh refinement size 2

  • Mesh refinement size 3

  • Mesh refinement size 4

As the refinement increases the plot is smoother and values are more accurate.

2. VELOCITY PLOT

The analysis is done with 4th level mesh refinement.

  • Valve lift 0.002

  • Valve lift 0.003

  • Valve lift 0.004

  • Valve lift 0.005

  • Valve lift 0.006

  • Valve lift 0.007

The plots shows the velocity increases directly with valve lift

3. PRESSURE PLOT

  • Valve lift 0.002

  • Valve lift 0.003

  • Valve lift 0.004

  • Valve lift 0.005

  • Valve lift 0.006

  • Valve lift 0.007

4. VALVE LIFT VS MASS FLOW RATE

The massflow rate increases with valve lift
