Project

Mixing efficiency of Tee joint using ANSYS FLUENT

OBJECTIVE: To setup the steady-state simulation and compare the mixing effectiveness of the following cases-

  • Case 1
    • Short mixing tee with hot inlet velocity of 3m/s
    • Momentum ratio of 2
  • Case 2
    • Long mixing tee with hot inlet velocity of 3m/s
    • Momentum ratio of 2
  • Case 3
    • Short mixing with hot inlet velocity of 3 m/s
    • Momentum ration of 4

INTRODUCTION:

PROCEDURE:

Step 1) Pre-Processing

1.1) Geometery

  • Open SpaceClaim, import the model of mixing tee short pipe pr mixing tee Long pipe as per the case.
  • Prepare the solid model, do volume extraction by selecting edges.
  • Deselect the solid and suppress it for physics.

1.2) Meshing and Naming

  • Start meshing and use hit and trial method with scientific guessing to select the element size. I experimentally perform the mesh generation from element size 7mm and finally chose the element size of 3mm to get fine results.
  • Go to mesh quality and select Element Quality in Mesh Metric to know the quality of mesh generated. Results above than 0.5% are accepted.
  • Give proper naming of all part of the body like Inlet-X, Inlet-Y, Walls, and Outlet.
  • Cut the plane into the middle of the body to get a better understanding.

Step 2) Solving

OUTPUT & RESULT

CASE 1: Momentum ratio = 2, SHORT PIPE.

As momentum ratio = velocity at cold inlet / velocity at hot inlet

Velocity at the cold inlet = 6 m/s

The mesh is made of

Residual graph-

We can observe that the convergence started from around 130 iteration.

Area -weighted Temperature graph-

Average outlet temperature comes out to 19.85-degrees Celcius.

Standard deviation graph-

Standard deviation got converged around 1.50.

Temperature contour-

CASE 2: Momentum ratio = 2, LONG PIPE.

The same kind of mesh is used as one used in case 1 short pipe.
