Machining with Planner Explicit Dynamic FEA using ANSYS Workbench
- Objectives: To analyze Machining Process in Planer Machine with Explicit Dynamic Module
- Geometrical Design:
Assembly for this project contains a work piece of Steel and a Cutting Tool used in Planer Machine, parts of this assembly looks like this.
- Material Properties:
The plate which is machined is of Steel 1006, here are its Mechanical properties.
- Problem Statement:
A plate is having steel as material will cut by a cutting tool in Planer Machine, The Plate is kept fixed at bottom and the cutting tool will be applied with different velocities. For this project Explicit Dynamics module of ANSYS Workbench is used. Tool will be given two different velocities and at the end we will look for certain results such as Deformation, Strain, Stress and Temperature.
- Mesh Criterion:
Type of Elements: Hexahedron for Work piece, Tetrahedron for Cutting Tool
Size of Elements: 0.6 mm Default (Edge Meshing - 10 Divisions)
Mesh Model:
Element Quality:
- Boundary Condition:
Work Piece is fixed from Bottom side; we will look only for results of Work Piece Plate only so Cutting Tool Stiffness Behaviour is changed to Rigid from Flexible.
Stiffness Behaviour:
Boundary Condition:
- Loading and Analysis Settings:
Velocity will be applied to Cutting tool in X direction to obtain various results, the analysis will run for 0.00075 seconds.
In first case Velocity will be 20000 mm/s & for second case velocity will be 15000 mm/s.
Analysis Settings:

- Post Processing:
CASE: 1 (Velocity – 20000 mm/s)
Total Deformation:
Equivalent Elastic Strain:
Equivalent Stress:

Post Process Results Summary;
- Results & Conclusion:
1) Total Deformation is higher in Case 1 (Deformation – 29.259 MM)
2) Equivalent Elastic Strain is higher in Case 2 (Strain – 2.3538)
3) Equivalent Stress is higher in Case 2 (Stress – 634.64 Mpa)
4) Temperature is higher in Case 1 (Temperature – 376.95 0C)
We can see from above analysis when there is higher velocity in cutting tool we observe higher stress, due to lower velocity in case 2 strain value increases and stress value also increase. If we see temperature in case 1 it is higher as compared to case 2.
