MESHING CYLINDER USING ANSA
OBJECTIVE:
The main objective of this project is to mesh the cylinder using using ansa.
Used element size as 1 units.
ANSA INTRODUCTION:
ANSA is a pre-processing tool widely used in engineering application. It is widely used in automotive field for testing purposes. All the vehicles we see undergo a number of steps durability, NVH, safety for crash. So all the models cannot be used and tested. So CAE helps companies create virtual models and to do virtual test on them.
Powerful meshing tools developed by ANSA which enable users to build high quality
meshes which lead to more accurate simulation results.
High performance and quality volume/shell meshing algorithms.
GEOMETRY USED:
The diagram below shows a cylinder model:
Fig 1
The fig 1 shown above is the cylinder in wire frame mode and gives a detailed description of edges and points.
Fig 2
The Fig 2 shown above is the cylinder in shadow mode and helps the user visualise the 3d part and it is in entity mode.
Meshing Procedure:
- Step 1: Click on file and open the file which we need to mesh from file option which is on the left top corner. This is the very first step.
ANSA supports a lot of file format ( .igs, .IGES, .ansa etc) but it depends upon the user which type of a file he wants to open in ansa.
Once the file is opened we are in the topo module.
- Step 2: The second step is to change from the entity mode to Pid mode which means property ID this is the preffered mode the user wants to be in.
After this is done we go to presentaion parameter under quality criteria and enable draw cons in PID, MID mode... like in entity mode. - The edges are now yellow in colour after we enable PID, MID mode... like in entity mode.
It helps us identify whether the cons are single, double or tripple. - Step 3: After doing these steps the 3rd step is to check whether the geometry is free from error. We check whether the surface has any holes, cracks , whether the surface is closed properly. We go to checks and after clicking we get a lot of option but first need to check for geometry.
Fig 3
Fig 3 shows the checks which have been performed. The red box highlights what we have checked for under check manager and also gives the status. None of the errors were found.
- Step 4: The fourth step is to assign the pid, that is naming the parts this is necessary when we run a simulation.
While assigning the pid make sure the cross-hatches option is turned from the bottom bar as it is for visibility option. This option gives the mid-point of the surface. The parts are named from the Set PID option under faces.
After assigning the property it can be checked from the property option which is present on the top bar left side.
Fig 4
Fig 4 gives the detail about the parts which has been assigned to the cylinder and can be accessed from the property option which has been highlighted. The property could be accessed by shortcut key also Ctrl+P.
- Step 5 : After performing these steps, in the fifth step we go for meshing the model so we shift to mesh module from topo mode. Once we shift to this module the cross-hatches are no longer visible. In mesh module we have only edges and nodes.
- Step 6: This is to choose the desired length from length under perimeter option. Select the entire model by drawing a box around the cylinder and middle click. After middle clicking we need to put the desirred length of the mesh. For the above model I've taken 1 unit.
- Step 7: To check the distance between the nodes we can also click on measure from top pannel. Left clicking on two consecutive nodes will display the distance between the nodes.
Fig 5
Fig 5 displays the distances between the nodes which is 0.997 nearly 1 unit. We can also store the values according to the requirements.
Step 8: The model is now ready for meshing. So to do meshing selecting the desired mesh from the options under mesh generation. In this cylinder model I have opted for Spot mesh. I've chosed the option for quad mesh construction and disabled the 2nd order option and enabled mesh reconstruction.
Fig 6
Fig 6 gives information about the shell the number of quads = 0 and trias = 604918 total =604918. The option list has also been highlighted in red on the extreme bottom right corner.
FINAL RESULT:
Fig 7
Fig 7 shows the result.
shells
quads = 0
tria = 604918
total = 604918
CONCLUSION:
This is a tria mesh and it uses equilateral triangles everywhere as equilateral triangles have very high quality meshing.
