Introduction to GT Suite and simulation of the Intercooler

1. Modules under GT suite:

a. GT power:

The industry-leading software for engine simulation with a detailed cylinder model and combustion analysis.

It has the following applications:

  • Engine performance and Acoustic
  • Exhaust after-treatment
  • Evaporative emission

b. GT suiteEmp:

It serves as a multi-physics platform to construct models in a wide range of applications including Cooling Systems and Thermal Management, Vehicle and HEV Fuel Economy, Hydraulics and Pneumatics, and many more.

It has the following application:

  • Cooling system and thermal management
  • Air conditionin
  • Fuel injection
  • Hydraulics and Pneumatics
  • Lubrication circuits
  • Cranktrain and crankshaft dynamics etc

c. GT autoLion:

GT-AutoLion is the industry-leading Lithium-ion battery simulation software used by cell designers and OEMs. It predictively models the electrochemical processes within Lithium-ion cells. Its fast and reliable electrochemical simulations are used to predict performance and life characteristics for any Lithium-ion chemistry under any operating condition.

d. GT drive:

GT-DRIVE+ is the next generation vehicle modeling framework built into GT-SUITE. It has been specifically designed for use by vehicle simulation engineers to efficiently model any type of vehicle, including conventional, commercial, hybrid, plug-in hybrid, battery, and fuel cell electric vehicles.

e. Some of sub-licensed modules which GT suite uses are as follows:

  • CONVERGE™ Lite – sub-licensed from Convergent Science
  • GT-SPACECLAIM – sub-licensed from Spaceclaim
  • GT-Linearization – linearization of models for controls development

2. Locate following settings:

  • Time control flag (5 Marks)

  • Time step and solution control and Integrator/Solver type (10 Marks) :

3. Explore intercooler tutorial and note down all settings of:

  • Run setup (5 Marks)

This is a very important module where all the settings are done according to our requirement and then it is run to obtain simulation. It contains the settings for time control, initialization, flow control, ode control, signal control, thermal control, convergence RLT.

  • Advanced setup (5 Marks)

It contains advanced setting as to change time step size , flow parameters, to change si unit of acceleration etc.

  • Plot setup (5 Marks)

It\'s a setting for the plots for which you have selected to appear. We can also set the maximum points which we want to plot.

  • Output setup (5 Marks):

It\'s a setting for the output which you want according to your requirement. Where to save the output plots etc.

4. Problem: (50 Marks)

Given:-

The diameter of cooler inlet and outlet pipe= 50 mm

Length of the CAC= 1000 mm

Inlet mass flow rate = 1200 kg/ h at 100 degC

Outlet pressure 2 bar at 30 deg C

  • Calculate the total heat transfer at Charge air cooler (CAC)
  • Calculate pressure drop across CAC

ANS:

Total Heat Transfer = 7.55 KW

Pressure Drop:

Presure Drop = 1.12e-5
