Gearbox Sloshing effect

Gearbox Sloshing effect

This setup is created to study and analyse the movement of the fluid inside a gearbox. There are two different fluids used for this setup to understand the flow of the fluid on the gears. These fluids are used to lubricate and to reduse the wear and tear of the gear which inturn increases the life of the gears.

MODEL

3D Model:

2D Model:

MESHING

  • Number of elements: 30181
  • Number of nodes: 16840

THE PACHED REGIONS FOR THE SETUP:

  • Blue: air
  • Red: water/oil

The user-defined function (UDF) used for the rotation of the gears for this setup is shown below:

#include \"udf.h\"

DEFINE_CG_MOTION(right_motion, dt, vel, omega, time, dtime)
{
	vel[0] = 0.0;
	vel[1] = 0.0;
	vel[2] = 0.0;

	omega[0] = 0.0;
	omega[1] = 0.0;
	omega[2] = 2.0e2; /* [rad/s]*/
}
DEFINE_CG_MOTION(left_motion, dt, vel, omega, time, dtime)
{
	vel[0] = 0.0;
	vel[1] = 0.0;
	vel[2] = 0.0;

	omega[0] = 0.0;
	omega[1] = 0.0;
	omega[2] = -2.0e2; /* [rad/s]*/
}

In all the cases below,

  • Flow time = 0.0670s.
  • Number of rotations of gear =2.

CONCLUSIONS

  • Water has higher density and lower viscosity. Therefore the velocity of the water is more compared to oil.
  • The increased velocity of water proves that the lubrication is less than that of the oil. (Better for cooling purposes).
  • Since oil has lower density and higher viscosity than water, its lubrication is better than water.
  • The simulation shows that, Oil stays on the surface of the gear teeth better than water. Therefore oil is the better lubricant here.
