GT-POWER FAMILARISATION SIMULATING THE INTERCOLER AND CALCULATING THE PRESSURE DROP AND HEAT TRANSFER ACROSS THE COOLER

1. Explore the GUI of GT SUITE and list down modules available with brief description.

GT-ISE : It is Gamma Technologies -Integrated Simulation environment, GT-ISE is the main interface where models are built, simulation settings are declared and simulations are launched. It is a place where various components are brought into a project map and connected together to form a model.

GEM3D: It converts 3D CAD models into 1D GT-SUITE models. It is a 3D-graphical pre-processer that combines, building and importing tools used to create 1D-gt suite models from 3d models.

COOL3D: GT-SUITE is the ideal modelling platform for vehicle cooling analysis.GT-suite models can be used to anlyse pressure drop, flow distribution and thermal performance of liquid circuits that cool heat-generating components. The separate COOL3D tool allows for 3D model building and automatic export of underhood cooling module.

VT DESIGN:It is a graphical pre-processor tool for valve train and cam design.

GT-SPACECLAIM:It is a 3D CAD tool, in which CAD models and preparation can be done.

GT-POST:Once simulation is complete, results are viewed in the GT-POST. It is a graphical interface that enables viewing and manipulating of the data collected from the smulation

INTEGRATED OPTIMIZATION:Every GT license includes full access to a builtin optimizer that allows optimization of any combination model.

DISTRIBUTED COMPUTING:Distributed computing enables models with multiple cases to be divided among the many cores of a cluster with multiple execution noodes, resulting in significant reduction in overall time to obtain results. Every GT license includes full access to a distributedcomputing

DOE&DOE POST:DOE Design tool and DOE -POST (Design of experiments),GT-SUITE includes comprehensive tools for Design of Experiments (DOE) creation, analysis and optimization

GT-SUITE contains all GT libraries and capabilities. The ideal choice for full vehicle design and analysis,GT-SUITE offers an all-inclusive package that provides an important cost advantage to users.

4. Problem:

Given

  • Diameter of cooler inlet and outlet pipe= 50 mm
  • Length of the CAC= 1000 mm
  • Inlet mass flow rate = 1200 kg/ h at 100 degC
  • Outlet pressure 2 bar at 30 deg C

    • Calculate the total heat transfer at Charge air cooler (CAC)
    • Calculate pressure drop across CAC

First have enter the values in GT-ISE, inlet and outlet that is 50mm, outlet is default value as input diameter, and length is 1000mm.

Here at inlet mass flow rate is 1200kg/hr at temperature 100C

At outlet pressure is 2 bar at temperature of 30c.

As per the given problem after entering the above values, now we can execute the program which intern opens post processing tool that is GT-POST.Where can check the pressure drop across air cooler and heat transfer across air cooler.

After giving the inputs and now for execution it asks the values in time control tab , maximum simulation duration time given is 30 seconds.

The steady state is achieved and simulation run and achieved the results with help of GT-POST

Pressure drop across CAC is :1.10E-5 bar

Total heat transfer at Charge air cooler is 7.554 KW
