Project

Flow through Pump

Introduction:

The following geometry was created it looks more similar to a real centrifugal pump. Because of better geometry no black flow is observed. It has forward facing vanes.

Setup :

3D simulation

Steady State with Rotation

Water as Fluid

Global Mesh Size - 3 (with advanced edge refinement)

There is a rotation mesh inserted around the impeller (not touching casing) with velocity 1000 rad/s

Boundary Condition : Inlet - Environmental Pressure - 101325; Outlet - Velocity - (varying)

Goal Inserted : Avg Outlet Total Pressure, Equation - \'Avg Outlet Total Pressure/ Inlet Total Pressure\'

Parameteric Study:

Input Parameter : Outlet Velocity - varying 5 - 30, 6 design point

Output Parameter : Avg Outlet Total Pressure & Equation - \'Avg Outlet Total Pressure/ Inlet Total Pressure\'

Result :

No conclusive trend in found in the parameteric study, but a over all decrease is observed which is correspondence with the expected decreasing graph. Performance graph of a centrifugal pump shows decreasing head with increase in mass flow rate with is approximately consistent with the result obtained.

Goal (Value) Design Point 1 Design Point 2 Design Point 3 Design Point 4 Design Point 5 Design Point 6

Mass Flowrate [Kg/s] 1.57 3.14 4.71 6.28 7.85 9.42

The given shows, mass flow rate on x axis and pressure ratio on the y axis

Conclusion :

From the diagram given below, we can clearly see that no back flow is observed.

As expected a approximate steady decrease in pressure ratio is observed.
