Flow over a cylinder
- The objective of this project is to simulate & analyse the flow over a cylinder for various Reynolds numbers and compare the results w.r.t., parameters like pressure and velocity.
- Procedure to generate the cylinder and basic flow simulation:
After opening a part file in SolidWorks, I selected the sketch option and developed a cylinder of .06m dia.,& length of .08m. Then I started the flow simulation wizard and after passing thro\' steps, in a particular step I selected time dependant flow simulation. Here, I entered time duration as .1s and points for capturing results to be .01s. Then I fixed the velocity along x-axis as 10m/s as I have developed the cylinder in the front view and 0m/s along the other axes. This marks the end of the wizard and I completed the wizard by clicking on \'finish\' button.
Now, I\'ve got a computational domain. Then I clicked on \'run\' to run the flow simulation.
- Cut-Plot and Animation Generation:
From results drop-down list I selected the cut-plots --> insert option. In that I selected pressure and then velocity using the same procedure.
In the same results drop-down list I selected the Animation --> insert option. Then I ran the animation wizard and selected the time for animation as 10s and the checked the scenario option and finished the wizard after a few steps. After performing a few steps I recorded the animation results and stored it.
- Results:
The results for the above simulation are as follows:
- Velocity Animation for normal case:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Z5qcx1PYbGxgRI_BNETpy_fRMsHURkJK
Observations : The flow takes place from left to right. The velocity at the top and bottom are more than the inlet or input velocity (>10m/s) and is extremely low (~0m/s) at the right as the flow over the cylinder takes place.
Inference : As the air strikes on the surface of the cylinder(left side) it gets diverted to the top and the bottom and hence the velocity increases at these places. As the flow proceeds the air is prevented from reaching the off-side of the cylinder, so the velocity at this position reduces (~0m/s). Thus above simulation is obtained.
- Pressure Animation for normal case:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1xI_Vz3PJNEECk0vLaHYsKGLTfvpSF-Wc
Observations : The flow takes place from left to right. The pressure at the incident point is more than the input pressure. The pressure at the top and bottom is less than the input pressure.
Inference: As the air flow is normal to the incident plane the force acting per unit area is more compared to the rest of the points. Hence the pressure at this point is more compared to the other points.

Similar kinds of graphs for diiferent velocities and pressure has been generated. I got
to know that the maximum velocity increases drastically as the input velocity is increased.
