Flow over a Cylinder
Objective
The aim of this project is to perform flow simulation analysis over a cylinder of an arbitrary diameter and length at an arbitrary Reynolds number and then perform the same analysis by increasing the Reynolds number by 20%, 40%, and 100%, then comparing the results and observations.
Equation
`R_e=(rho*V*d)/mu`
`R_e` = Reynolds number
`rho` = Density of the fluid
`V` = Velocity of flow
`d` = Diameter of the cylinder
`mu` = dynamic viscosity of the fluid
Dimensions and initial conditions
Diameter of the cylinder: `10m`
Length of the cylinder: `10m`
Fluid used: Air
Density of fluid: `1.16 kgm^(-3)`
Dynamic Viscosity of air: `1.86x10^(-5) kgm^(-1) s^(-1)`
From the above equation, whenever the Reynolds number increases by a certain percentage, the velocity also increases by the same percentage if all the remaining parameters remain constant. The various flow velocities are 12m/s, 14m/s, and 20m/s.
Results
10 m/s
12 m/s
14 m/s
20 m/s
Observations
- The boundary layer has become smaller with an increase in Reynolds number.
- The tail of the boundary layer has become shorter.
