FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF BEVEL GEAR-GRID DEPENDENCY TEST
PROJECT OBJECTIVE: Performing grid dependency test on Bevel Gear.
ABSTRACT:
In grid dependency test, the mesh is made finer till the accurate results are being obtained. We perform grid dependency test in FEA to accurately obtain the stress, strain, deformation and other related parameters of simulation by constantly refining the mesh till a point where further refinement of mesh will not change the results.
SIMULATION OF THE BEVEL GEAR ASSEMBLY:
Mesh sizes of 6mm, 5mm, and 4mm are used while performing the grid dependency test.
MATERIAL:
The material used for this model is structural steel.
Material properties are:
DENSITY: 7850 kg/m3
YOUNG'S MODULUS:2E+11 Pa
POISSON'S RATIO:0.3
TENSILE YIELD STRENGTH:2.5E+08 Pa
ULTIMATE TENSILE STRENGTH:4.6E+08 Pa
MODEL:
The model is trimmed to requirement to reduce unnecessary simulation time.
CONTACT DETAILS:
BEHAVIOR:SYMMETRIC
FORMULATION:AUGMENTED LAGRANGE
INTERFACE TREATMENT:ADJUST TO TOUCH
TYPE OF CONTACT:FRICTIONAL
AUGMENTED LAGRANGE is used to reduce the penetration of joints and displacement during rotation.
BODY TO GROUND contacts are used to define the revolute joints.
ANALYSIS SETTINGS:
NO OF STEPS:6
DEFINE BY:TIME
INITIAL TIME STEP:0.1s
MIN TIME STEP:0.05s
MAX TIME STEP:0.2s
LARGE DEFLECTION: ON
20 degree rotation in each step is applied to smaller gear and moment of 100N-mm is applied to bigger gear for each step.

CONCLUSION:
It is seen that the stress, strain and deformation results are nearly same in all three cases and there isnt much of a variation. The results point towards grid independence.
