Emission characterization on a CAT3410 engine
Simulations were done on 2 types of piston profiles. Our aim is to compare the amount of emissions and performance of 2 different diesel engines having these profiles.
omega profile(1): open w piston(2):
Simulation has been done at 1600 rpm.
- graphs of soot emitted v/s crank angle are as follows:
omega profile:
open w profile:
we can see from the graphs that the soot emitted from the open w piston profile(1.7e-06,approx.) are higher than the omega piston profile(1.2e-06,approx.).Such difference can be viewed from cut-plane animations.
Animations have been attached below.
*Note-range of soot produced in animations have been changed just for reference for clear view of flow and quantity.
- graphs of nox emitted v/s crank angle are as follows:
omega piston profile:
open w piston profile:
We can see from the graphs that the nox emitted from the omega piston profile(5.2e-06, approx.) are higher than the open w piston profile(2e-06,approx.).
Cut-plane animations have also been created to get a view of the difference of flow and quantity of nox produced in combustion cylinder.animations have been attached below.
- graphs of unburnt hydro-carbons emitted v/s crank angle are as follows:
omega piston profile:
open w piston-
We can see from the graphs that the Unburnt Hydro-carbons emitted from the open w piston profile(6e-05, approx.) are higher than the omega w piston profile(4.7e-05,approx.).
Cut-plane animations of fuel parcels have also been created to get a view of the difference of the flow and quantity of UHC produced in combustion cylinder.In open w piston some fuel is still unburnt and flow of unburnt fuel can be seen easily in animations.
animations have been attached below.
Power values from each engine profile are as follows-
Calculations-
rpm=1600rpm
rps=1600/60=26.667rps
degree per second=26.667*360=9600
second per degree=1/9600=0.0001041667
seconds for whole cycle=0.0001041667*respective degrees considered for simulation
For omega piston profile:
seconds for whole cycle=0.0001041667*270.165=0.0281422
Power=Work done / seconds for whole cycle=3338.96/0.0281422=118,646.01914562 W
=118.646 KW
(Work done is deciphered from the performance parameters after simulation)
Imep=1.36794e+06
For open w piston:
seconds for whole cycle=0.0001041667*270.178=0.0281435
Power=Work done / seconds for whole cycle=3052.49/0.0281435=108,461.63412510 W
=108.462 KW
Imep=1.25057e+06
Power and Imep comparison for both the piston profiles has been shown below graphically:
