OBJECTIVE:
To design the surface of fender based on various factors on consideration such as pedestrian safety and vehicle dynamics.
INTRODUCTION:
Fender is a term for the part of an automobile that frames a wheel . Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating tire. Fenders are typically rigid and can be damaged by contact with the road surface, hence reducing impact on passengers.
The fender has mainly 5 point of attachments:
- Drip
- Cowl
- Sill
- Pillar
- bumper
DRIP:
- Drip is basically a attachment which links the fender part towards the engine compartment or engine housing.
- When the design for the drip area is made it is made with consideration that the tool can easily reach up to the point where the bolt is to be applied.
- The fender draft length downwards is kept within 60 mm. else might fluctuate and tolerance may not be met finally.
- its also seen that minimum ditance (atleast 10 mm ) is mentained between engine block and drip to avoid contact by vibration.
- Emboss is provided on the drip section to give more strength to the material.
COWL:
- Cowl attachment is basically used to link the fender towards the rear-view part of a car.
- the emboss are provided for giving more strength for the part
- Certain cars have baffle attached in this region to reduce the vibration hence increase the efficiency.
SILL:
- this attachment links the fender to the sill of the car.
- Enough relief is to be provided so that the tool moves smoothly during the machining operation.
- Holes are provided for bolting.
BUMPER:
- This part links the fender to the bumper of the car
- The angle of offset of this part is provided based on the bumper design and the pedestrian safety factors.
PILLAR:
this attaches the fender to the A pillar of the car.
METHODOLGY:
|
STEP1: load the raw fender design to catia interface. |
|
STEP2: obtain the sweep for different areas of fender |
|
STEP3: provide emboss with the help of new planes and offset commands. |
|
STEP4: provide the holes for bolt based on the bolt size. |
|
STEP5: join all the surfaces |
|
STEP6: thicken the fender surface in part modelling. |
|
|
CONCLUTION:
The structure of a fender is obtained based on the design considerations using the catia v5 software.
