Channel flow simulation using CONVERGE CFD
OBJECTIVE
- To set up a channel flow for three different mesh grid sizes using convergent science and paraview.
- To show various velocity and pressure contours for the different mesh.
- To show the various plot of velocity, pressure, mass flow rate and total cell count for different mesh grids.
PROFILE GEOMETRY:
Lengths along x,y, z-axis are;
x=0.1m y=0.01m z=0.01m
INITIAL BOUNDARY CONDITIONS:
- The flow is general flow.
- Air contains a mixture of O2 and N2 which will flow through the required geometry.
- The pressure at the inlet and outlet of the geometry is 100001 Pascal and 100000 Pascal.
- The Prandtl number is 0.9 and the Schmidt number is 0.78.
- The total number of cycles performed is 15000.
MESH SIZES:
- dx = 2e-4m dy = 2e-4m dz = 2e-4m
- dx = 1.5e-3m dy = 1.5e-3m dz = 1.5e-3m
- dx = 1.0e-3m dy = 1.0e-3m dz = 1.0e-3m
These mesh sizes provide study of the profile. Finer the mesh size ,more better results can be obtain about the profile.
RESULTS:
Base Mesh sizes are provided below
base mesh size (2e-4m)
base mesh size (1e-3m)
base mesh size (1.5e-3m)
The pressure contours for different meshes are provided below

CONCLUSION:
- Finer meshing provides better results about the profile as finer meshing makes it smooth.
- According to the plots as the mesh size decreases the cell count increases.
- At the initial cycles, the velocity doesn't remain the same but after a few more cycles it becomes constant
- At the initial cycles, the pressure fluctuates but after a few more cycles it becomes constant
- The mass flow rate during inlet and outlet remains the same, according to the law of conservation of mass.
