Challenge 1

  1. Degrees of freedom (or) movability is the number of dimensions (control parameters) an object can move about. There are 6 DOF\'s in general - 3 translational, 3 rotational. It gives us a sense of how an object moves in space when force is applied.
  2. A ball joint is an illustration of a spherical pair. Therefore, all translatory motion is successfully constrained. Hence, the Degrees Of Restraint of a ball joint is 3.
  3. Yes, five links are essential to restrict the DOF\'s. Of these five links, not all links are required to be individual links/members. For example, an A-arm function as 2 links. Likewise, MacPherson strut is equivalent to 2 links. Hence, a total of five equivalent links are required.
