Centrifugal pump design and analysis

AIM:

In this project ,we create the 3d modelling of centrifugal pump and the basic simulation and then perform the parametric study. we also Obtain the relationship between Pressure ratio and mass flow rate and explain our results.

CENTRIGUGAL PUMP:

“A centrifugal pump uses rotation to impart velocity to a liquid.” Every centrifugal pump includes an impeller. The impeller is the hydraulic component that rotates to impart velocity to the pumped liquid.

“A centrifugal pump converts velocity into flow.” Every centrifugal pump includes a casing. The casing is the hydraulic component that captures the velocity imparted by the impeller and directs the pumped liquid to the pump discharge point.

At the most fundamental level, a centrifugal pump consists of just these three components:

  1. An impeller that rotates and imparts velocity to a liquid.
  2. A casing that captures the velocity generated by the impeller and transforms that velocity into a stable flow.
  3. An assembly of mechanical components that makes it possible for the impeller to be rotated within the pump casing.

GEOMETRY AND MODELLING :

PARAMETERS FOR BASELINE SIMULATION:

1. Analysis type = internal

2. fluid = water

3. rotation = 1000 rad/sec

4.Boundary condition at inlet = 1bar(enviroment pressure)

5.Boundary condition at outlet = 10 m/sec

RESULTS OF BASELINE SIMULATION:

PARAMETRIC STUDY:

Here we do parametric study , where we test the design at 5 different velocities( 10m/s,20m/s,30m/s,40m/s,50m/s).

we find the outlet pressure ,inlet total pressure and mass flow rate at all the design point .

and then we calculate PRESSURE RATIO.

  • Pressure ratio = Outlet total pressure/ Inlet total pressure

PRESSURE RATIO = TOTAL PRESURE1(OUTLET PRESSURE) / TOTAL PRESSURE2 (INLET TOTSL PRESSURE)

** negative sign in mass flow rate indiacte that mass is going out of the body.

PERFORMANCE CURVE:

performance curve show how a pump preform in regard of pressure head and flow.

CONCLUSION:

As this curve is generally parabolic but we had input random dimesion that is why the plot has peaks .
