Cam Piston Challenge
OBJECTIVE - You need to run the analysis with Frictionless contact, Frictional with 0.1 and 0.2 as the frictional contact for a total of 3 cases
MATERIAL-
GEOMETRY -
Geometry is imported into the Transient Structural Model.
ANALYSIS SETTINGS- Frictionless in case 1 and Frictional Contacts in Case 2 and Case 3 are defined.
JOINTS -
Fixed Barrel
Revolute Joint
Translational Motion to CAM FOLLOWER
MESH - The model is meshed with faces in contact having sizing of 3mm.
The meshed model is shown here.
ROTATION - Rotation given to the the model as per the following.
RESULTS-
CASE 1- Frictionless Contacts
Equivalent Stress - 488.8 MPa
Directional Deformation -10.41 mm
Equivalent Elastic Strain - 0.0024
CASE 2- Frictional Contact 0.1
Equivalent Stress - 555.47
Directional Deformation -10.438 mm
Equivalent Elastic Strain - 0.0028
CASE 3- Frictional Contact 0.2
Equivalent Stress - 678.32 MPa
Directional Deformation - 10.48 mm
Equivalent Elastic Strain - 0.0034
INFERENCE -
Equivalent Stress - Stress in the follower keeps on increasing as we increase friction coefficient values. So as the friction coeffcient value increases it will try to resist more the movement of follower and thus the stress develops at the stem of the follower.
Directional Deformation - It is increasing slighlty with increasing friction coefficient value, increases the roughness also increases and follower ball stick more to cam grove and movement is resisted more due to friction. Due to this stem of follower bends more and directional deformation increases.
Equivalent Elastic Strain - Also because of the same reason as equivalent stress, Equivalent Strain also increases due to more resistance offered .
