Exhaust port analysis
Exhaust Port
Description:
Exhaust port is a component which is used to tranfer the exhaust gas from the engine to the atmosphere. Here,we are going to analyse that how the heat transfer takes place within the exhaust port. For that we are going to analyse two cases.
Case 1: Analysis of Exhaust port (general mesh).
Case 2:Analysis of Exhaust port (Fine mesh).
Steps in Analysis of Exhaust Port:
- Geometry
- Meshing
- Set up
- Solution
- Result
Case 1: Analysis of Exhaust port
- General mesh
Geometry:
- Importing the model.
- Fluid volume extraction.
- Share topology.
1.Importing the model
The first step in this case is importing the solid Exhaust port model to the space claim.
2.Fluid volume extraction:
Fluid volume extraction is defined as extracting the volume of the fluid region. In this case,we are extracting the volume of the exhaust gas. Here, the exhaust gas is the fluid medium.
3.Share Topology
Share topology is defined as sharing the information. Here,we are sharing the information between between the fluid region and solid region.
Meshing:
Meshing is defined as discretizing the solid model into a small inividual elements. In this case the fluid volume is discretized into a small elements of default size(0.15m)
- No of elements=137889.
- No of nodes =27500.
After completion of meshing, naming should be done.
Set up:
The set up for this case is as follows,
General :1.Pressure based solver
2.Steady state condition
Model :1.Energy-On
2.Viscous-K epsilon
Material :1.Fluid-Air
2.Solid-Aluminium
Cell zone condition :1.Volume-fluid
2.Solid-Aluminium
Boundary condition :1.Inlet-Velocity inlet-5m/s,Temperature-700K
2.Wall-Convection-Heat transfer co efficient-20w/m^2-K
3.Outlet-Pressure outlet
Initialization :Hybrid initialization
Solution:
It is a post processing stage. Here, the temperature is analysed. After that the calculation runs for 400 iterations and then the calculation is converged in the 350 iterations.
Result:
The result opens in CFD post. Here,a plane is created and then the temperature, velocity and heat transfer co-efficient is analysed in the plane.

Case 2: Analysis of Exhaust port
- Fine mesh

2.Inflation:
Inflation is defined as adding additional layers to the faces. Here,we are adding additional layers to the fluid volume.
Inflation in one inlet:
3.Sizing:
Sizing is defined as incersing the number of elements in mesh by decreasing it's element size. Here,we are decreasing the element size of 0.01m in the solid wall.
- No of elements=374750.
- No of nodes =65450.

Conclusion:
In case 1, the mesh is generated with the default element size and then there is no inflation layers were created so that the accuracy is less.Whereas,in case 2, the inflations were created.Due to this inflation layers the mesh around the solid wall is very finer so,that the temperature distribution among the solid and fluid volume is analysed clearly and then the temperature along the boundary layers were also clearly visible. In comparison of both the cases, case 2 is accurate than case 1.
