Bullet Penetrating Bucket Simulation
OBJECTIVE:
To simulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket using 3 different non-linear materials for the bucket and analyse their behaviour for the same velocity of bullet.
SOLUTION:
Step 1: Part Model and Material
The model was used as given and the analysis was carried out for 3 different non linear material; Titanium Alloy NL, Stainless Steel NL and Magnesium Alloy NL, used for the bucket in three different cases. The material for the bullet was assigned as tantalum and the body was defined as rigid, since the focus of the analysis is the bucket.
Step 2: Meshing
The bucket body was meshed such that the mesh is finer along the edges where penetration takes place and coarser on least important faces. This was done by giving a face sizing on these edges with element size of 10mm and a general mesh size of 50mm.
Step 3: Analysis Settings
The bucket was defined as fixed at the bottom face and the bullet was given a velocity of 139000mm/s. The analysis was carried out with end time step as 0.05sec and maximum energy error as 5.
Step 4: Results
The total deformation, equivalent stress and equivalent strains were analysed.
Case1: Titanium Alloy NL
Case 2: Stainless Steel NL
Case 3: Magnesium Alloy NL
