F.E.A Of Buckling with SOLIDWORKS

Abstract: In this study, we will perform a buckling analysis on a cyclonic separator stand in SOLIDWORKS 2016 . This stand model is designed with a stiffener for creating the factor of safety against buckling. In this study we will also find the optimum position for the stiffener and Compare the results for all the position cases of stiffener using tables and we will highlight the best one.

Introduction: Cyclonic separator is a device which separates the particles from flue gases by using the principle of inertia. It is basically an air pollution control device. So for handling the heavy weight of this device, simulation of its stand is necessary. This stand has four long type legs which act as a column so for this we have to do buckling analysis.Buckling: It is not only criteria of fail by strength of material in column, but It is a criteria which consist both material and geometric behavior. Buckling of columns is a form of deformation as a result of axial compression forces. This lead to the bending of column, due to instability of column. This mode of failure is quick, and hence dangerous.This will occur less than the ultimate stress of a subjected member.

Buckling load: The compressive load on long column at which column shows unstable buckling or deformation (not capacity of column to return its original shape after removing the load) about any plane or axis.

P=buckling load

L= effective length

Imin= moment of inertia about centroidal axis.

Buckling factor of safety: It is the ratio of buckling load to the currently applied compressive load. It should be maximum for design safety.

1.Choose simulation module in SOLIDWORKS interface then click on new study option in study advicer.

2.choose’ Buckling’ study.

3.Apply Alloy steel material.Then click on external load option in left side interface window,choose upper surface of stand for applying the load and put 15000N force on that surface.

4.Press the right click of mouse on Fixture option,then choose fixed geometry option and then select the bottom faces of four legs of stand.

5.Press the right click of mouse on mesh option and select ‘mesh and run ‘option. By this option automatically default mesh will create with results.

At certain position of stiffer.

Optimum Position: For finding optimum position to get higher factor of safety against buckling load, we will Press right click of mouse on the option of buckling simulation study(name as mention by user) which will be present at below interface of Solidworks and select the new design study option .Then a short window will be open then mark the optimization option in it.

Then create variables: In this case distance of stiffer was a variable from 400mm to 1900mm with step size of 400mm.

Constraints: In our case of study the constraint is Buckling Factor of Safety which should be more than 20.

Goals:In this option we select that our focussing optimization goal. In our case is Buckling of safety maximize

Result:

1.The Buckling factor of safety without stiffer is 9.3941

2.The Buckling factor of safety with stiffer at randomly choose position is 14.455 . It means using of stiffer is benificial as compare to without stiffer for heavy loading condition.

3.The optimum position of stiffer is at 1200mm because at this position we get maximum buckling factor of safety which is 22.729334. It means now stand can bear approx two times more load as compare to without stiffer, because stand with stiffer has two times more buckling factor of safety as compare to stand without stiffer.
