Bevel Gear Analysis with Grid Dependency Test 4mm 5mm 6mm

1)Write a few words on what a grid dependency test is and its use.

Answer:

The Grid Dependency test is a exersice conducted in FEA to analy or to conclude the size of mesh for the given model.

The reason for this test is to optimize the size of the mesh. If the size of the mesh is coarse, the results are not accurate. However if the mesh size is fine then the processing time, cost are more. It also requires a more advance system configaration, which may not be required for perticular model.

This tes is conducted by changing the size of the mesh from coarse to finer unless there is no significant change in the results.

2. GRID DEPENDENCY TEST

Objective:

To Analyse the optiomum size of the Mesh for the given model.

Exersice:

Analysis Conducted on with overall Mesh size of 4mm, 5mm & 6mm. However, the Face size of mesh is 1.75mm for all the three activities.

Considarations:

Model : Bevel Gear (Big Gear With 24 Teeths and Small Gear with 16 Teeths).

Material : Structural Steel for both the Gears.

The Small Gea rotated at 6 Phases (0,20,40,60,80,100 & 120deg).

The Momonet applied on the Big Gear of 100N-mm in all the 6 Phases.

Case - #01 Wtih Mesh Size 4mm

1. Max Equivalent Stess. - 4.315Mpa

2. Max Equivalent Strain. - 0.00002451

3. Total Deformation. - 47.883mm

Case - #02 Wtih Mesh Size 5mm

1. Max Equivalent Stess. - 4.360Mpa

2. Max Equivalent Strain. - 0.0000248

3. Total Deformation. - 47.883mm

Case - #03 Wtih Mesh Size 6mm

1. Max Equivalent Stess. - 3.547Mpa

2. Max Equivalent Strain. - 0.0000208

3. Total Deformation. - 47.883mm

Result Matrix:

The Matrix between Mesh size 4mm, 5mm & 6mm.

SL Mesh Size Max Equ. Stess Max Equ. Strain Total Deformation

No. mm Mpa mm

01. 4mm 4.315 0.0000245 47.883

02. 5mm 4.360 0.0000248 47.883

03. 6mm 3.547 0.0000208 47.883

Conclusion:

With reference to above matrix, there are no significant changes observed in stress and strain with mesh size 4mm and 5mm. However difference can be observed between mesh size 5mm and 6mm, even though the Total Deformation is constant in all the three sizes.

Considering the above observation, we can conclude that, either 4mm or 5mm size Mesh will be optimum mesh to derive the Stress, Strain and Total Deformation for this model.
