BUCKLING ANALYSIS ON A CYCLONIC SEPARATOR STAND USING SOLIDWORKS
AIM:Perform a buckling analysis on a Cyclonic Separator stand.
INTRODUCTION:-
1.STRUT:Structural member subjected to axial compressive load is called strut.
2.COLUMN:Vertical structural member fixed at both ends and subjected to axial compressive load is called column.
3.BUCKLING: It is an instability that leads to structural failure. When a structure is subjected to axial compressive stress buckling may occur.
PROCEDURE:A cyclonic separator stand is downloaded from a given file.
Now, buckling analysis is done only on the stand by excluding all other parts from the assembly in the analysis.
Material is selected as Alloy Steel.
BOUNDARY CONDITIONS:The four legs of the stand are fixed at the bottom by applying fixtures.
A Force of 1500 Newtons is applied on the top surface of the stand.
After application of boundary conditions mesh is created and analysis is done.
AFTER OBSERVING THE BUCKLING RESULTS OF SEPARATOR STAND,WE TRIED TO FIND OUT, IF WE ADD A METALLIC STIFFENER BETWEEN THE LEGS OF STAND WHAT DIFFERENCE IN THE RESULTS WE WILL GET.SO,WE ADDED A METALLIC STIFFENER BETWEEN THE LEGS OF STAND AT A OFFSET DISTANCE OF 1000 mm AND THICKNESS OF 50 mm.
BOUNDARY CONDITIONS:The four legs of the stand are fixed at the bottom by applying fixtures.
A Force of 1500 Newtons is applied on the top surface of the stand.
After application of boundary conditions mesh is created and analysis is done.
THE RESULTS SHOW THAT ALTHOUGH THE MASS OF MASS OF PART HAS INCREASED,BUCKLING FACTOR OF SAFETY HAS INCREASED FROM 9.37 TO 20.42 AFTER ADDING A METALLIC STIFFENER BETWEEN THE LEGS OF STAND.
NOW,WE CAN CONDUCT A DESIGN STUDY TO DETERMINE PARAMETERS FOR AN OPTIMAL DESIGN OF OUR SEPARATOR STAND.
BOUNDARY CONDITIONS:The four legs of the stand are fixed at the bottom by applying fixtures.
A Force of 1500 Newtons is applied on the top surface of the stand.

PARAMETERS USED FOR DESIGN STUDY :-
1) OFFSET DISTANCE OF METALLIC STIFFENER ( INITIAL OFF. DISTANCE OF MODEL=1000 mm)
2) THICKNESS OF METALLIC STIFFENER (INITIAL THICKNESS OF MODEL = 50mm)
3) BUCKLING FOS SHOULD BE GREATER THAN 3 (INITIAL FOS OF MODEL = 20.42)
4) MASS SHOULD BE AS MINIMUM AS POSSIBLE (INITIAL MASS OF MODEL = 31 KGS)
14 Simulations ran to give us the optimal design parameters.
FOR OPTIMAL DESIGN OFFSET DISTANCE OF METALLIC STIFFENER SHOULD BE 1300 mm AND ITS THICKNESS SHOULD BE 30 mm SO THAT WE CAN ACHIEVE FOS,DISPLACEMENT AND MASS AS GIVEN IN THE IMAGE ABOVE.
