BUCKLING ANALYSIS IN A CYCLONE SEPARATOR WITH STIFFNER

AIM

To simulate the buckling analysis in a cyclone separator of the given model using solidworks simulation.

PROCEDURE

  • Export the model from the data given in the challenge.
  • Now supress the additional features of the model and save it as the part file.
  • Open the part file and perform the solidworks simulation.
  • Create new study and name it as buckling analysis.
  • Apply the basic alloy material with the part.
  • Now apply fixed support at the ends of the cyclone separator.
  • Then give a load value of 150KN respectively.
  • Run with the basic mesh provided.
  • Then,create new design study.
  • Give the necessary paarmeters.
  • In this i have provided the offset distance of the stiffner and width of the stiffner as parameters.
  • Then choose the values from the simulation data and from the dimensions and provide step values for each.
  • Now apply Goals to the parameters to get the maximum value.
  • After that you will get your desired results respectively.

CYCLONE SEPARATOR

Cyclone separators or simply cyclones are separation devices (dry scrubbers) that use the principle of inertia to remove particulate matter from flue gases. Cyclone separators is one of many air pollution control devices known as precleaners since they generally remove larger pieces of particulate matter.

USES OF CYCLONE SEPARATOR

Cyclone separators utilize gravity and a vortex to remove particulates from gaseous streams. Industrial cyclones are used in pollution control applications most commonly as a first stage, lower cost method for removing larger particulate matter (PM) from effluent gas streams.

BUCKLING ANALYSIS

Linear-buckling analysis is also called eigenvalue buckling or Euler buckling analysis because it predicts the theoretical buckling strength of an elastic structure. Eigenvalues are values of load at which buckling takes place. Eigenvectors are buckling shapes associated with the corresponding eigenvalues.

FACTOR OF SAFETY

The definition of the safety factor is simple. It is defined as the ratio between the strength of the material and the maximum stress in the part. ... When the stress in the model remains much inferior to the strength of the material, the safety factor stays superior to 1 and the model is « safe »

BUCKLING FACTOR OF SAFETY

The buckling load factor is an indicator of the factor of safety against buckling or the ratio of the buckling loads to the currently applied loads. Since buckling often leads to bad or even catastrophic results, you should utilize a high factor of safety (at least >3) for buckling loads.

MODEL OF CYCLONE SEPARATOR

SIMULATED MODEL AFTER ANALYSIS WITH STIFFNER

SIMULATED MODEL AFTER ANALYSIS WITHOUT STIFFNER

BUCKLING FACTOR OF SAFETY WITH STIFFNER

The buckling factor should be more. Thus, it is incresed with stiffner to 27.937

BUCKLING FACTOR OF SAFETY WITHOUT STIFFNER

This shows that buckling factor of safety is less without stiffner.

DESIGN STUDY PROCEDURE:

FROM THE BASIC PROCEDURE WE CAN SEE THE SIMULATION RESULTS. IN THIS I HAVE USED 17 SCENARIOS OUT OF THAT ONLY 4 TO 5 BECOMES OPTIMUM.

RESULTS TABLE VIEW:

With this, we can see that green plots shows the optimum results and others with red fails to meet our desired requirements.

Conclusion

Therefore from the results we can see that the optimization of analysis reaches with our desired scenario at 1000mm and also with the parameter of width value of 65mm to 75mm respectively.

By this result we can see the results showing red value for those which fails to meet our criteria or exceeds our limit.

Buckling factor of safety should always be greater than 10.

By using stiffner we can increase the factor of safety value.
