Assignment 3 - SI engine modelling

OBJECTIVE:

To do a case study on an Honda SI Engine F20C variant and to run the setup in GT-Power for Maximum Power and Maximum Torque conditions and get the key performance graphs.

ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Four cylinder DOHC (Dual Overhead Camshaft) 16 valves (87mm*84mm)
  • 4 valves/cylinder i.e. Two intake and two exhaust
  • Naturally aspirated and water cooled
  • Rated power 176 KW @ 8300rpm
  • Maximum torque 208 N-m @ 7500rpm

ENGINE DESIGN:

The engine parameters for our engine are noted down as shown in the figure below:

The parameters of the parent object of the cylinder are noted down as shown in the image given below:

  • Engine Cylinder TWall temperatures are the temperatures imposed on piston, head and cylinder during full load conditions.
  • Specific assumptions are made for our combustion and heat transfer objects.

We are assuming that fuel is directly injected through the engine cylinders and not through the ports. Our final model is described by an image as shown in the picture given below:

RESULTS:

We run the case setup for maximum power and maximum torque conditions.

The combined engine parameters designed for our engine during maximum power and maximum torque conditions are shown in the tables below:

  • When running the case setup for maximum torque condition we can see that the value for BSFC has gone down to 336.5g/kW-h. Also when the engine runs at a higher speed we see that the mass flow rate is higher along with higher fuel flow rate as well in maximum power conditions and it happens vice versa for maximum torque conditions

CONCLUSION:

Thus post processing is done and the results are analysed using GT-Power
