Assignment 1 - Understanding GT Power

1. Explore the GUI of GT SUITE and list down modules available with brief description.

Ans:

Modules in GT Suite are as follows:

COOL 3D:

COOL-3D is a CAD-based preprocessing tool used in conjunction with GT-COOL to simulation 3-D underhood cooling modules integrated with 1-D cooling circuits. COOL-3D allows for the solution of the transient air flow around and/or through grilles, blockages, stacked heat exchangers, fans, and the engine block. Consequently, COOL-3D is able to predict the transient thermal performance of the cooling module, which is crucial to accurately simulating the overall cooling system performance.

GEM 3D:

GEM 3D has been developed as a pre-processor to GT-POWER. It is a tool in which a model of a complete exhaust or intake system can be built, including multiple mufflers, resonators, airboxes and the pipes that connect them. This tool enables the user to build detailed and sophisticated models in a 3-D CAD-based tool. Shell shapes can be built, including the capability to build mufflers with pipes that bend at angles other than 90 and 180 degrees and pipes that can lie at any angle relative to the origin.

GT ISE (Integrated Simulation Environment):

GT-ISE is the main interface where models are built, simulation settings are declared, and simulations (both single and batch) are launched. It is an environment where various components are brought into a project map and connected together linking the entire model as a whole.

GT POST:

Once a simulation is complete, results are viewed in GT-POST, a graphical interface that enables viewing and manipulating of the data collected from the simulation.GT-POST contains the functions such as Graphically based data post-processing,generate 2-D and 3-D plots,Combine data from different cases, simulations, or tests into a single plot etc.

VT DESIGN:

VT-DESIGN is a graphical preprocessing tool for valvetrain and cam design. It has several capabilities such as Cam design tool for creating/modifying cam profiles,Dimension-by-dimension visual setup of the valvetrain mechanism,Kinematic and Quasi-Dynamic analysis can be run and viewed directly from the VTDESIGN interface.

GT SPACECLAIM:

GT-SPACECLAIM is a 3D CAD tool included with GT-SUITE. Key applications inclludes Extracting the inner/fluid core (negative) of a solid model,Simplifying geometry to prepare a model for simulation,Building solid geometry for simulation before production CAD files are available etc.

2. Locate following settings:

Time control flag:

Go to

Run Setup > Time control

Time step and solution control

Time step and solution control:

Go to

Run setup > Flow control > Time step and solution control

Integrator/Solver type:

Go to

Run Setup > ODE control >Integrator/Solver type

3. Explore intercooler tutorial and note down all settings of:

Run setup:

Run setup consist of following Attributes:

  • Time control
  • Initialization
  • Flow control
  • Signal Control
  • ODE Control
  • Thermal Control
  • Convergence RLT

In run setup, we can choose the time interval such as periodic or continuous, time step solution control such as implicit or explicit, ODE solver like runge kutta etc.

Advanced setup:

Advanced setup consist of following Attributes:

  • General
  • flow
  • mechanics
  • Restart
  • Version changes
  • Paths
  • Misc Files

Plot setup:

In plot setup, we can set max no. of plot points, plot range, location ,sampling interval etc.

Output setup:

Output setup consist of following Attributes:

  • Data storage
  • General
  • GT-POST setup
  • flow
  • ODE MECH
  • ScoreboardRLTs

UserScoreboardRLTs

  • EndofRunTables

In output setup, we can modify the setiing of data storage like plot files to be stored, plots to be included in GT POST.

4. Problem:

Given

  • Diameter of cooler inlet and outlet pipe= 50 mm
  • Length of the CAC= 1000 mm
  • Inlet mass flow rate = 1200 kg/ h at 100 degC
  • Outlet pressure 2 bar at 30 deg C

Find

    • Calculate the total heat transfer at Charge air cooler (CAC)
    • Calculate pressure drop across CAC

Solution:

1.Go to files tab and open tutorial and under engine performance open 06-6cylDturbo and find intercooler.gtm.

2.Enter Inlet mass flow rate = 1200 kg/ h at 100 degC

3.Enter Diameter of cooler inlet and outlet pipe= 50 mm & Length of the CAC= 1000 mm

4.Enter Outlet pressure 2 bar at 30 deg C

5.Press RUN to solve and view result in GT-POST

Result:

  • Total heat transfer at Charge air cooler (CAC) = 8.44 kW
  • pressure drop across CAC = 0.0245 bar
