ANSYS- Shot Peening

Sphere pressing on a plate:

Geometry and Material:

Add the appropriate materials that are needed to be used to the Engineering Data.

The Geometry includes the following components: A plate and a sphere.
Plate: Structural Steel NL.
Sphere: Structural Steel.

Contacts:

Frictional contacts(f=0.2) is setup between the sphere and the plate as shown below:

Mesh:

The mesh is obtained as follows:

Analysis Settings:

The analysis is set up for 4 steps with the following settings for all the steps.

Symmetry:

Two Symmetry regions are inserted as shown below:

Boundary Conditions:

The overall Boundary Conditions are shown below:

  1. The plate bottom is fixed using "Fixed Support".

  2. The Sphere is given a displacement as shown below:

Solution:

The desired output variables are selected in the solution. The File is then solved for.

  1. Equivalent stress:
The Equivalent stress in the plate is plotted below. It can be seen that the stresses are present even after the sphere retracrts due to plastic deformation of the plate.
  2. Equivalent Plastic Strain:
In this case the plastic strain is of much significance as the workpeice is made to undergo plastic deformation by peening of the sphere. The elastic strain is recovered but the plastic strain is what is stored in the material at the end of the peening process.

Conclusion:

This type of analyis can be useful to understand the residual stresses and the plastic strain that are retained at the surface during shot peening process. It is very useful in evaluating the hardness of the surface due to the work hardening using shot peening.
