3D CAD Modelling in Star CCM+

Objective: The objective of this report is to understand the CAD modeller features in Star CCM+ and use it to generate a 3D model of an Ahmed Body and a Convergent Divergent Nozzle in the same as per the drawing given below

Procedure & Results:

Convergent Divergent Nozzle:

1. Entered the 3D-CAD modeller by navigating to '3D-CAD' under 'Geometry' in the simulation tree, and right clicking on the same and then 'new'

2. Selected the x-y plane and entered the sketcher workspace by right clicking on the plane and clicking on 'create sketch'.

3. Created the line sketch of the quarter section of the CD nozzle as shown below. Provided the dimensions as given in the drawing and used contrains to fix the features of the sketches in order to avoid any disturbances in the later stages or during reuse or modifying certain parameters.

4. While providing the dimensions for the inlet, throat and outlet radius ticked on the "Expose Parameter" so that the dimensions of the inlet and outlet can be changed easily without actually editing the sketch

5. After the sketch was completed, clicked on 'ok' to exit the sketcher, and used the revolve command by right clicking on the sketch in the feature tree to create the 3D. The revolve was done along the x-axis by 360degrees to generate the following

Ahmed Body:

1.Entered the 3D-CAD modeller by navigating to '3D-CAD' under 'Geometry' in the simulation tree, and right clicking on the same and then 'new'

2. Selected the x-y plane and entered the sketcher workspace by clicking right mouse button on the plane and clicking on 'create sketch'.

3. Created the line sketch of the cross section (xy plane) as shown below. Provided the dimensions as given in the drawing and used contrains to fix the features of the sketches in order to avoid any disturbances in the later stages or during reuse or modifying certain parameters.

4. Clicked on 'ok' to exit the sketcher and then clicked right mouse button on the 'Sketch' in the 3D CAD model tree and clicked on extrude. Provided the extruding length as per the drawing and the following 3D model was generated

5. Again selected the front face and clicked right mouse button to goto fillet tool; provided the fillet radius as per the drawing. The following changes were done to the above 3D model

6. Selected the bottom face and clicked the right mouse button to enter the sketcher mode. This step was done to create the sketch for the legs. The sketch as shown below was created and the dimensions were provided as per the drawing

7. Clicked on 'Ok' to exist the sketcher and renamed the sketch on the tree to 'Leg Sketch'. Then selected 'Leg Sketch' and clicked on right mouse button to select 'extrude' tool from the menu. The extrude tool was used to extrude the leg sketch up the required dimension as per the drawing

This concludes the final step and the final model is shown below
