Are you looking to land a job in data analytics? If so, you’ll need to prepare for your Tableau interview. In this blog post, we’ll provide you with the top 10 Tableau interview questions and answers for 2023.

Introduction to Tableau

Tableau is a powerful data visualisation and analytics software that helps organisations to analyse, visualise, and share data quickly. It is a popular tool among data analysts and business intelligence professionals. Tableau helps to understand and make decisions based on data quickly. It can be used to create interactive dashboards, maps, and charts. Tableau lets users connect to multiple data sources, including Excel, CSV, and databases.

Tableau Interview Questions and Answers

Here are the top 10 interview question and answers for a Tableau interview.

1. What Are the Data Types Supported in Tableau?

Tableau supports various data types, including text, numbers, dates, geographic coordinates, and images.

  • Text data types include strings, numbers, and dates.
  • Numbers include integers, floats, and decimals.
  • Dates include the date and datetime.
  • Geographic coordinates include latitude, longitude, and elevation.
  • Images include JPEG, GIF, and PNG.

2. What is Meant by ‘discrete’ and ‘continuous’ in Tableau?

Discrete and continuous are two types of data that Tableau uses to create visualisations.

  • Discrete data can be counted and is usually expressed as a numerical value. Examples of discrete data include the number of products sold, the number of customers, and the number of orders placed.
  • Continuous data can be measured and is usually expressed as a range of values. Examples of continuous data include temperature, speed, and distance.

3. What Are the Different Joins in Tableau?

Joins are used to combine data from multiple tables to create more meaningful and useful insights. The most common joins used in Tableau are:

  1. Inner Join: It combines data from two tables by matching values in a common field. All rows from both tables with matching values in the common field will be included in the resulting table.
  2. Left Join: A left join combines data from two tables by matching values in a common field. All rows from the left table will be included in the resulting table, even if no matching values are in the right table.
  3. Right Join: A right join combines data from two tables by matching values in a common field. All rows from the right table will be included in the resulting table, even if no matching values are in the left table.
  4. Full Outer Join: A full outer join combines data from two tables by matching values in a common field. All rows from both tables will be included in the resulting table, even if no matching values exist.
  5. Cross Join: A cross join combines all rows from one table with all rows from another. This join does not rely on a common field.
  6. What is the Difference Between .twbx And .twb?

      .twbx

The data source and all the information required to generate the visualisation are included in the.twbx file. It compresses the entire package of files and is known as a packaged workbook.

      .twb

Information on how to interact with the data source is contained in the.twb file. Tableau will examine the data source while creating a visualisation and then create the visualisation using an extract. Since it merely includes instructions and the data source needs to be attached separately, it cannot be shared alone.

5. How do you Connect Tableau to your Website?

A developer must be completely familiar with the Javascript API to link Tableau to a website. You may inspect and make changes to a Tableau spreadsheet or dashboard from the comfort of your web browser. The Javascript API functions utilised have all been listed in full by Tableau. The free tutorial also includes usage instructions for some key features. All dashboards and worksheets published on Tableau Public, Tableau Online, or Tableau Server are automatically linked to the Javascript API. A developer needs to call that API from HTML code to use it.

6. What are the Different Tableau File Types?

Tableau offers a variety of file types for data analysis, including

  • Tableau Workbook (.twb)
  • Tableau Packaged Workbook (.twbx)
  • Tableau Data Extract (.tde)
  • Tableau Data Sources (.tds)
  • Tableau Packaged Data Source (.tdsx)
  • Tableau Bookmark (.tbm)
  • Tableau Map Source (.tms)
  • Tableau Preference (.tps)

7. What is a Tableau Dashboard?

Tableau dashboards are collections of various views or visualisations, each displaying a distinct type of data. Users can access the entirety of the data on a single screen.

8. How do you Create a Tableau Dashboard?

First, you'll need to gather the data you want to visualise. Once you have the data, you can connect it to Tableau and create your dashboard.

  • Open Tableau and select the data source you want to connect to. You can connect to various data sources such as Excel, CSV, and databases.
  • Once you have connected your data source, you can begin creating your dashboard.
  • To create a dashboard in Tableau, you must create worksheets and view them. Worksheets are used to create visualisations, while views are used to organise the visualisations into a dashboard.
  • To create a worksheet, you'll need to select the type of visualisation you want to create, such as a bar chart or line graph. Once you have created the worksheet, you can add it to a view. You'll need to drag and drop the worksheets you've created into the view to create a view.
  • You can add filters, parameters, and other elements to the view. Once you have created the view, you can save it as a dashboard.

9. What are the Different Tableau Visualisations?

Tableau visualisations are an important part of data analysis and presentation. It offers various visualisation types, including

  • Bar Charts
  • Line Graphs
  • Scatter Plots
  • Maps
  • Heat Maps
  • Pie Charts
  • Tree Maps

10. What is the Difference Between Data Blending and Data Joining?

Data blending is the process of combining data from two or more sources, such as

  • Oracle
  • Excel
  • SQL Server

Each data source in data blending has its unique dimensions and values.

Data joining combines data from two or more tables or sheets inside the same data source. Consistent dimensions and measurements can be found throughout all combined tables or pages.
