Imagine this: you are an architect, and a client approaches you to build his house. He explains his vision of the house, and you start designing and coming up with a 2D floor plan. Your client does not understand these plans but questions your ability to build his house.
What if there was a way to show your client a 3D model of his future house?
Wouldn't that be an architect's dream? Revit is both your wishes rolled into one.
Autodesk Revit is a Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. It is used by architects, landscape architects and structural engineers to digitally create and model their building designs. Users have the ability to modify entire buildings and assemblies or specific 3D shapes in the work environment. According to the UK-based NBS's annual BIM Report, only 13% of respondents used BIM tools in 2011. 73% of respondents now use BIM software such as Revit.
Revit includes categories of objects, such as,
Revit is used in architecture to design and generate photorealistic renderings. Files created on other software like CAD can be imported and worked on in Revit; it is primarily recommended for Architectural design for the following reasons.
Revit is a great tool for automation. All data used to create a Revit model is stored in a single database. This means that whenever you modify the model, the database is updated. The changes are carried throughout the model, allowing for automation and making the building design process more efficient (as well as eliminating some of the rework associated with chasing changes around our various project files).
The term "parametric modelling" refers to the process of creating 3D models based on a set of rules. Revit employs parametric modelling through "families." Everything in Revit is part of a "family," from title blocks to 3D views to building components like walls or floors; some are built into the software, others are accessible through libraries, and still, others are created from scratch.
A family is created by assigning dimensions and properties to 2D or 3D data, which can then be modified by a Revit user (for example, the height, width, or thickness of a door family). Revit models have more control over the design of buildings.
Revit is a powerful tool for collaboration between architects and other members of the design team. One of the more prominent differences between the two is the ability for multiple users to work in the same Revit model. Whereas AutoCAD allows only one user to make changes to a.dwg file at a time.
Using Revit's 'Sync-with-Central' tool, users can push their model changes to a 'Central' model while also pulling any changes made by colleagues from that same 'Central' model into their 'Local' copy of the model. This process provides the project team with full collaborative functionality.
Collaboration is aided by Revit's interoperability with other Autodesk software, such as AutoCAD or FormIt, as well as the numerous plug-ins created by other software companies and applications.
Cost estimation is a critical part of any architectural project, and Revit can help you accurately estimate costs for materials and labour.
The degree to which structural designs impact energy efficiency affects operational and maintenance costs over time. Revit can simulate the building’s estimated energy consumption with built-in tools. When creating structural models, the software also enables efficient workflows. This includes advanced layout options as well as synchronisation.
Civil engineers, architects, and other team members will be able to read and comprehend the requirements for each structure. The interface is user-friendly, and the software enables teams to create code-compliant designs. The workflow has been streamlined to allow for quick turnaround time on projects with tight deadlines. Integration and collaboration are essential for allowing teams to work across disciplines at the same time.
Revit is an invaluable tool for architects that can help them create better designs faster and more accurately.
