Challenge

Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

  • Objective:-

To conduct an explicit dynamics simulation of tension and torsion test of a specimen till its breaking point and to study the deformation, equivalent stress and temperature rise of the specimen during the simulation.

  • Model Details:-

Above shown test specimen is given for simulation, we will fix one end and apply suitable displacement on the other end for conducting tension and torsion test. Number of meshed elements are around 20000, so well within the academic license limit.

We have chosen SS 1006 material from the explicit materials library of Ansys.

  • Loads and Constraints:-

As shown above, one end is fixed and other end is applied with a suitable displacement. For tension test, a displacement of 18 mm is applied and for torsion test, a displacement of 1200 degrees is applied.

The simulation end time for both the studies is 0.001 seconds.

  • Results:-

For tension test:-

For torsion test:-

  • Conclusion:-

In conclusion we can state that we have successfully simulated tension and torsion test in Ansys. As expected we saw a cup-cone pattern in tension test. We saw flat shear plane in case of torsion test. These both failure behaviour are as expected from a ductile material like Steel 1006.
