Challenge

Simulating Tension and Torsion test of a specimen in Ansys using Explicit Dynamics module

OBJECTIVE

To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided

Tension test - displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed.

Torsion test - displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree.

Importing the CAD model

The CAD model is imported using spaceclaim and checked for any geometry errors.

Simulation setup

Material Assignment

The workpiece is assigned with the material STEEL 1006 which is in Explicit material library.

Coordinate system definition

Three cartesian coordinate systems are defined in the tension test specimen. One in centre and two on either side as given below.

For the torsion test, in the centre alone instead of cartesian coordinate cylindrical coordinate is used

Mesh Generation

Specimen for Tension - The element type is given as tetrahedrons. Face sizing of 3mm is given within a sphere of influence of radius 22.0 mm

Specimen for Torsion - The element type is given as tetrahedrons.Face sizing of 3mm is given within a sphere of influence of radius 22.0 mm

In order to calculate accurate results in torsion affected area, another face sizing is given for 1.5mm on either sides of the centre.

In the centre a third sphere of influence of radius 22.0 mm is defined with an element size of 1mm

Analysis settings

The analysis settings is defined with step end time of 1.e-003

The step control and solver settings are given below.

For Tension test one end is fixed and another end is given a displacement of 18mm

For Torsion test also one end is fixed and on another end an angle displacement of 1200° (degree) is given in Y-axis

Results

Tension test results

Total Deformation

Equivalent Stress

Temperature

It is seen that during necking process the temperature of the layers in the necking region increases to 267.35 °C

Torsion test results

Total Deformation

Equivalent Stress

Temperature

In the torsion region the specimen completely breaks and small particles are scattered. In this area due to torsional stress the temperature increases to 466.35 °C

Conclusion

The equivalent stress in torsional loading is ( 666.97 MPa) which is more than that of in tensile loading.

The maximum total deformation is more in torsional loading .

The molecular dislocations which dissipate the heat is the reason for temperature generated in these processes.

Maximum Total Deformation Maximum Equivalent Elastic Stress Maximum Temperature Generated
Tensile test 18.004 mm 637.54 MPa 267.35 °C
Torsion test 19.394 mm 666.97 MPa 466.35 °C
