Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge
OBJECTIVE:-
- To perform Tension and Torsion test on a specimen with displacement of 18 mm and 1200 degree respectively.
Geometry:
Materials:
Steel 1006 was assigned to the model.
Mesh:
For Tensile test:
Two co-ordinate system were created as shown.
Mesh type as trahedrons method was used.
The selected faces of the model, two sphere of influence was used for its mesh type and mesh size was assigned to be 2.5 mm.
For Torsion test:
Element size of 1.5 mm for two corner faces as shown and centre has sphere of influence of 1 mm.
Analysis settings:
End time = 1e-3 sec.
Fixed support:
One end of the model was fixed.
Displacement:
For tensile test 18 mm displacement was assigned.
For Torsion test:
Displacement (in Y) of 1200 degree is assigned with new co-ordinate system.
While assigning the Values, it was made sure that the X and Z components were assigned with value 0 mm (ramped).
Solutions:-
Tensile Test:
Total deformation:
Min. value = 0 mm ; Max. value = 18.003 mm
Equivalent stress:
Min. value = 0 MPa ; Max. value = 631.86 MPa
Temperature:
Min. value = 22 degree Celcius , Max. value = 280.38 degree Celcius
Torsion Test:
Total deformation:
Min. value = 0 mm ; Max. value = 18.127 mm
Equivalent stress:
Min. value = 0 MPa ; Max. value = 644.63 MPa
Temperature:
Min. value = 21.991 degree Celcius , Max. value = 421.08 degree Celcius
CONCLUSIONS:-
Comparing both cases in tabular form:

- For Equivalent stress, Torsion test with value of 644.63 MPa is having Maximum stress as compared to Tensile Stress which has 631.86
- Temperature is generated more in Torsion test with value of 421.08 degree Celcius.
