Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Introduction to Tension and Torsion:

Tensile/tension tests are used to determine how materials will behave under tension load. In a simple tensile test, a sample is typically pulled to its breaking point to determine the ultimate tensile strength of the material. The amount of force (F) applied to the sample and the elongation (∆L) of the sample are measured throughout the test. Material properties are often expressed in terms of stress (force per unit area, σ) and strain (percent change in length, ε).

To obtain stress, the force measurements are divided by the sample’s cross sectional area (σ = F/A). Strain measurements are obtained by dividing the change in length by the initial length of the sample (ε = ∆L/L). These values are then presented on an XY plot called a stress-strain curve. Testing and measuring procedures vary based on the material being tested and its intended application.

Torque, also called moment or moment of force, is the tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis or pivot. Torque is rotational force. The amount of torque developed is proportional to the force applied and to how far from the center of the rotation the force is applied.

Objective:

To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided.

Procedure: For Tension test

* Open ANSYS Work bench, from the analysis systems drop the Explicit Dynamics in Project schematic.

* Select required material from materials tab, In our case-1 we need Structural Steel (Default) for cutting tool, and Steel 1006 for work piece.

*Import Geometry and open in design modular to check the geometry. Open in Mechanical module and rename the parts (if required) for easy identification purpose.

* Insert Local coordinate systems on both sides of the shaft for further usage.

* In the mesh, Insert mesh method as tetrahedrons, and insert sphere of influence on previously inserted coodinate systems with diameter of 22mm and element size as 3mm. generate mesh.

* In the analysis settings, enter the value of end time as 1e-3s.

* Insert Displacement under explict dynamics, and select 2 faces of at one end of the shaft. and define it in x direction by 18mm.

* Insert fixed load and select another end of the shaft to fix it constant.

* To Obtain results, Insert Total deformation, Equivalent stress and Temperature user defined results under the solution and click on SOLVE.

For Tension Test:

* Keep all the settings as it is, and needs more to add, insert one more coordinate system at the middle and define the type as cylindrical for further usage.

* In the mesh insert face sizing for shaft both necks with element size of 1.5mm, insert sphere of influence for middle coordination system 8mm diameter and element size as 1mm and generate mesh.

* In the dispalacement select cylindrical cordination system and give the rotation angle as 1200 degress in Y-component.

* Keep all the output results as it is and click on the solve to run the simulation.

Results:

Total Deformation 18.005mm and 11.477mm for tension test and torsion test respectively.

Equivalent stress: 630.84 MPa and 658.7 MPa for tension test and torsion test respectively.

Temperature UDR: 269.27c and 339.36c for tension test and torsion test respectively.

Conclusion: Tension test and torsion test performed for given model and simulation done sucessfully.
