Challenge

Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Aim: To conduct a tension and torsion test on the steel 1006 explicit material.

Procedure:

Materials: Go to engineering data and import steel 1006 from the explicit dynamics materials.

Geometry: Drag and drop the geometry in space claim to upload it.

Setup:

Components: Assign a co-ordinate system on both sides. And in the center of the workpiece assign a cylindrical co-ordinate system.

Mesh: Use mesh sizing to refine meshing in the region of study. Here it is the center of the workpiece as that's where the deformation will be occurring.

Analysis Settings:

  • Tension
    • Number of time step:1
    • End Time: 2e-03s
  • Torsion
    • Number of time step:1
    • End Time: 1e-03s

Load Settings:

  • Tension
    • Add fixed support to one side of the workpiece.
    • Add a displacement of 18mm in the X-direction.
  • Torsion
    • Add fixed support to one side of the workpiece.
    • Add a displacement of 1200 in the Y-direction of the cylindrical coordinate system.

Solution: Obtain the total deformation, equivalent stress, and temperature of the specimen and compare them

Results & Discussion:

Tension:

The maximum displacement is 18mm.

The maximum equivalent stress at the end of the time step is 388.8MPa. Over time the maximum stress is 642MPa.

The rise in temperature is experienced at the point of fracture and it is 346.95 C. This is reached at 1e-03s and then remains constant. this is an indication that the separation takes place at that instance.

Torsion:

The total displacement is 13.241 mm. This increases and decreases due to the rotation applied to the workpiece.

The maximum stress experienced is greater than the tension test. Here the maximum stress is 565.72 MPa.

The maximum temperature at the region of fracture is 455.52 C. This is greater than the tension test.

Conclusion: The tension and torsion test was successfully conducted and it is observed that temperature and stress for the torsion test are higher than the tension test.
