Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Tension and Torsion Test

Objective: To perform the tension and torsion test on the specimen provided.
For the tension test, displace one end of the specimen to 18mm while keeping the other fixed and to find out the total deformation, equivalent stress, and temperature of the specimen
For the torsion test, you will need to displace one end of the specimen to an angle of 1200 degree and to find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen.

Geometry:

The specimen for both tension & torsion test remains same as is shown above.

Materials:

Steel 1006 is used as material for the specimen and its properties are defined above.

Case 1: Tension Test

Coordinate System:

Different cartesian coordinate systems are defined for refining the mesh & also to apply load at precise locations.

Mesh:

Mesh metrics is shown above.

At certain locations the mesh is refined w.r.t sphere of influence & element size as shown above.

Patch Conforming Method is used-Tetrahedrons
No of Nodes: 8002
No of elements: 36170

Analysis Settings:

The analysis settings used is shown above.

Boundary Conditions:

A displacement load of 18mm is applied at one end of the specimen.

The other end of the specimen is fixed as shown above.

Energy Conservation & Time Increment:

Results:

Total Deformation:

The specimen encounters a maximum deformation of 18mm as shown above.

Equivalent Stress:

The specimen encounters a maximum equivalent stress of 463.91Mpa as shown above.

Temperature on body:

The specimen reaches a maximum temperature of 355.93 deg Celsius as shown above.

Case 2: Torsion Test

Coordinate System:

Different cartesian coordinate systems are defined for refining the mesh & also to apply load at precise locations. The Coordinate system displaced above at the center is defined as cylindrical coordinate.

Mesh:

Mesh metrics is shown above.

At certain locations the mesh is refined w.r.t sphere of influence & element size as shown above.
No of Nodes: 9990
No of elements: 46705

Analysis Settings:

The analysis settings used is shown above.

Boundary Conditions:

A displacement load of 1200deg is applied at one end of the specimen as shown above.

The other end of the specimen is fixed as shown above.

Energy Conservation & Time Increment:

Results:

Total Deformation:

The specimen encounters a maximum deformation of 19.76mm as shown above.

Equivalent Stress:

The specimen encounters a maximum equivalent stress of 639.81Mpa as shown above.

Temperature on body:

The specimen reaches a maximum temperature of 462.76 deg Celsius as shown above.

Comparison:

Total Deformation
(mm)

Equivalent Stress
(Mpa)

Temperature of Body (deg Celsius)

Case 1

18

463.91

355.93

Case 2

19.76

639.81

462.76

From the above comparison, it is seen that total deformation, equivalent stress, and temperature of the body is raised in Case 2 as compared to Case 1. Due to high shear in Case 2 there is higher stress & temperature.
