Week 9 Tension and Torsion test challenge

Objective – To perform Tension and torsion Test on the Specimen. For the tension test displace one end of the specimen to 18 mm while keeping other end fixed, and for torsion test displace one end of the specimen to 1200 degrees. Material to be used is steel 1006.

Find out the total deformation, equivalent stress and temperature of the specimen.

Solution – First we add the material needed from the engineering library.

Material Properties for Steel 1006

Now we upload the model to the geometry and open it in space clam and see if there are any discontinuities in the model.

Update the model to the mechanical module. And Opening the module.

For the tension test

We create two co-ordinate systems at the centre of both the ends of specimen.

As there are no contacts we directly go to the mesh.

For the sizing of the specimen the two ends are meshed with element size of 3mm. We use the co-ordinate systems created at the centre of both ends and mesh with a sphere of influence of 22mm

For the analysis setting we give end time as 1e-3.

One end of the specimen is given a fixed support and the other is give a displacement of 18mm.

After setting up the problem we add the parameters that are need as a result. Temperature is taken from the Ansys worksheet and then we solve.

For the Torsion test

Same specimen is used for the test

In this case we add a third co-ordinate system and define the type as cylindrical.

For the sizing of the specimen the two ends are meshed with element size of 3mm. We use the co-ordinate systems created at the centre of both ends and mesh with a sphere of influence of 22mm

And for the centre of the specimen we mesh with the element size of 1mm.

The analysis settings are the same as for the tension test.

The displacement is give as 1200 degrees.

Adding all the results needed in the solution and solving the problem

Torsion test =https://youtu.be/c25B6huC8gg

Conclusion- The stress in the torsion is slightly less as compared to tension test

But the temperature for the torsion test is nearly double as for the tension test.
