Explicit dynamic analysis of a planar machining setup with different cutting speed values
OBJECTIVE
To perform an explicit dynamics simulation on a planar machining setup with different cutting speed of the tool
The CAD model is imported using spaceclaim and checked for any geometry errors.
Simulation setup
Material Assignment
The tool is assigned with structural steel and the stiffness behaviour is defined as Rigid.
The workpiece is assigned with material STEEL 1006 with stiffness behaviour as flexible and the body interactions is given as frictionless.
Mesh Generation
The tool is meshed with tetrahedrons element type. The four small edges of the workpiece are selected and given 10 as number of element layers.
Analysis settings
The analysis settings is defined with step end time of 7.5.e-004 and maximum energy error is given as 0.1
The bottom surface of the workpiece is defined as fixed support
The tool is given as 20000mm/s in case (1) and 15000mm/s in case(2)
case(1) 20000 mm/s
case(2) 15000 mm/s
Results
Case (1) cutting speed =20,000 mm/s
Total Deformation
Equivalent Stress
User defined result (Temperature)
Case (2) cutting speed =15,000 mm/s
Total Deformation
Equivalent Stress
User defined result (Temperature)
Comparing results
| Cutting speed | Maximum Total Deformation | Maximum Equivalent Elastic Stress | Temperature (User Defined result) |
| 20,000 mm/s | 34.309 mm | 673.52 MPa | 367.77 °C |
| 15,0000 mm/s | 23.612 mm | 674.53 MPa | 364.75 °C |
In case (1) Velocity = 20,000 mm/s
The deformation is maximum about 34.309 mm
The temperature is maximum about 364.75 °C
In the case (1) the material removal rate will be more as the cutting speed is higher in value
