Week 9 Machining with Planer Challenge
MACHINING WITH PLANER
OBJECTIVE:
To perform an explicit dynamic analysis of a machining operation where the cutting tool propagates at a specified velocity along the length of the workpiece.
The analysis is performed with 2 cases, the first one with a tool velocity of 20000mm/s and another with 15000mm/s.
The required results like the Equivalent Stress, Total Deformation, temperature are to be extracted
PROCEDURE:
- Create a new explicit dynamic simulation
- Import explicit steel 1006 material from explicit materials as the desired material for all the components
- Import the geometry model from spaceclaim GUI
- Then the model module of explicit dynamics is again updated.
- Open the model in ansys mechanical module.
Material assignment
Set steel 1006 for the workpiece component
Contacts
Delete unnecessary contacts since contact forces wont be studied
However, set a body interaction defined for all bodies for the dynamic analysis
Mesh
Create a method with tetras for the tool and set its stiffnes behaviour to rigid since it will not be studied

Analysis settings
Specify the end time of the explicit dynamics model as 7.5e-4s

Loading condition (displacement)
Fix one end of the face of the specimen
Specify a velocity of 20000mm/s along the direction of the length of the specimen in case 1 and a velocity of 15000mm/s in case 2.
RESULTS
CASE 1: velocity - 20000mm/s
Equivalent stress

Total deformation

Temperature

CASE 2: velocity - 15000mm/s
Equivalent stress

Total deformation

Temperature

CONCLUSION
From the above results we can observe that the equivalent stress, total deformation and temperature generated is high in case 1 compared to case 2. It is quite obvious that this is due to the fact that the cutting tool velocity is higher in case 1 and with the end time being the same in both cases, the energy dissipated would naturally be higher in case 1 and would significantly result in a greater internal stress generated at the specimen and this would inturn give out more heat as measure in temperature output.
