Week 9 Machining with Planer Challenge

Explicit Dynamic simulation

Objective- To perform a Explicit dynamic analysis for planer cutting operation. Material for the work piece is steel 1006. Need to run the analysis with two cases with velocity 20000 mm/s and 15000 mm/s for the tool. Find out the Equivalent Stress, total Deformation and User defined result for temperature and compare them for both the cases.

Case 1 – 20000 mm/s

Case 2 – 15000 mm/s

Solution – Case 1

First we add the material needed from the engineering library.

Material Properties for Steel 1006

Now we upload the model to the geometry and open it in space clam and see if there are any discontinuities in the model.

Update the model to the mechanical module. And Opening the module.

For the tool we set the behaviour as rigid as we are not intrested in stresses on tool.

Change the material for work piece to steel 1006.

Now in connections we remove all theh contact between work piece and tool.

As a explicit dynamic method of analysis is used when there is a large deformation in a very short period of time.

Explicit dynamic analysis is used in a car crash analysis or a drop test of laptop or Phone.

So we are not intersted in the contact between tool and the work piece.

We generate edge sizing for the work piece and devide the thickness of it into 10 divisions.

For analysis settings we input end time as 7.5e-4

we set the end time as 7.5e-4.

Now we set the velocity for the tool at 20000 mm/s.

After setting up the problem insert the desired results in the solution and solve.

Equivalent Stress

total Deformation

Temperature -

CASE 2

For case 2 we set the velocity at 15000 mm/s for the tool

analysis setting are kept at

Equivalent Stress

Total Deformation

User defined result is calculated with expression of TEMPERATUREALL from the work sheet.

Temperature

Comparison Table –

Stress (Mpa) Total Deformation(mm) Temperature(deg)
1 Case 1 (velocity 20000 mm/s) 492.44 29.259 376.95
2 Case 2 (velocity 15000 mm/s) 637.73 23.505 363.51

Conclusion -

From the table we see as the speed of tool decreases the stress along with defromation increases.

But the temperature in case of 15000 mm/s is slightly less as compared to 20000 mm/s.
