Week 9 Challenge

Aim:- To calculate the scour depth and fix the span for the given liner waterway and find out the suitable foundation for the abutment and pier.

Introduction:- Pier and abutment undermining due to scouring and riverbed erosion has been widely recognized as the main cause of bridge damage and failure. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has estimated that 60% of bridge collapses are due to scour. The phenomenon of local scour has been extensively studied at bridge piers and abutments founded in non-cohesive sediments.

So thereby calculation of scouring depth is a very important factor for fixing the type and depth of foundation in river bridges.

Conclusion:- On the basis of the above calculation I have come to the conclusion that the abutment should be provided with pile foundation as the depth of foundation is considerably less, on the other hand, piers should be provided with the well foundation as the depth is considerably high.

Also, there would be 4 spans each of 15m.
