Challenge

Performing Transient analysis on Worm Gear using Ansys

OBJECTIVE

To perform a Transient structural analysis on a worm gear assembly and get results for Equivalent stress, Equivalent elastic strain and the total deformation in the model.

Importing the CAD model

The CAD model is imported using spaceclaim and checked for any geometry errors.

Simulation setup

Material Assignment

Both the worm and gear are assigned with structural steel material.

Contact definition

The worm and gear are given a frictionless contact between them. Only few gear teeth are selected for the simulation

Joint creation

Two Body-Ground revolute joints are created for the worm and the gear

Mesh Generation

The entire setup is meshed with default element size.

Analysis settings

The simulation is done in 45 steps.

Few steps settings is shown below.

The worm is given input rotation motion in 45 steps with each step having 50 degree of rotation and thus a total of 2250 degree rotation along Z-axis.

Results

Total Deformation

Equivalent Strain

Equivalent Stress

Contact Status

It can be seen that the tooth has sliding and Near contact status. In some alone sticking takes places.

Contact Pressure

The contact pressure value is maximum at the point where the worm contacts the gear.

Maximum Total Deformation Maximum ElasticEquivalent Strain Maximum Elastic Equivalent Stress
Worm Gear 21.267 mm 6.3999e-003 mm/mm 1157.1 MPa

The maximum strain and stress occurs at the root of the gear teeth.
