Week - 8 - Morphing
Objectives
Objective 1: Practice morphing techniques on Model 1
Objective 2: Increase the Height of the Dog houses and Ribs by morphing model 2
Procedure
Objective 1
1. Import the model into ANSA and perform Topo and Orient operations.
2. Perform geometry check and fix any errors encountered.
3. Go to the morph Tab
4. Select Boxes> New >Geometry and select the required Macros to create a morph box around those macros.
5. To start morphing select Move from Box morphing Tab
6. Selct the nodes that are to be moved and than either move them freely or traslate to a specified distance.
7. After moving the nodes to achieve the desired geometry, delete the boxes.
Operation 1

Operation 2

Operation 3

Operation 4

Objective 2
Procedure
Procedure for objective 2 is similar to objective 1, we just need to create the morph boxes for the correct macros
Morphing Operations

Result
Both the models are morphed such that their shspes have been changed considerably
For the second model the Height of the ribs and doghouses have been increased.
Applications of Morphing
Morphing is the process of adpatation of CAD of computational grids (Mesh morphing) to change the shape of the Finite element grid.
Morphing is mainly applied in circumstances when certain design changes need to be studied in an existing design, morphing operations requires much less time than creating a completely new CAD/FE model.
Automobile Industry
Morphing is extreamely useful in studying effect of design changes, like changes in vehicle Structure with small changes in design, evaluation of design concepts starting from the morphed predecessor models, retrofit design and Aerodynamic modelling.
Ship Design
In recent times Morphing have been used extensively in Ship hull design as it reduces time and can gnerate enough parametric possibilities for improvements in Hull design, one of the most important aspect of ship designing.
Biomedical Research
Morphing is actively used in biomedical research in areas such as determintion the biomechanical response of a structure, implant positioning and virtual bone modelling.
Turbine Design and Analysis
Mesh and Shape Morphing is Applied in Aerodynamic stress Analysis in turbine/helicopter blades
Learning Outcome
Application of morphing on a sheet metal component to achieve suttle design changes.
