Challenge

Week 8-Challenge

Objective:

Create a tetra mesh for the given models within the specified element size.

Procedure:

Tetra mesh for the housing:

Step1: Open hypermesh window -> radioss

Step2: import the downloaded model.

Step3: the housing model consists of two components the hub and the housing cover.

Hub:

Step 4: delete the solids, the geometry consists only of the surfaces

Step 5: use the quick edit option to rectify the minor geometrical and the topological errors.

Step 6: then go to the 2D panel and use the automesh option to mesh the displayed surfaces of the hub.

It results in meshing of the surface as shown below:

Step 7: go to tools -> check elements-> check the min and max element size that is given in the quality crietria ie., 2mm and 7mm.

Step 8: If any errors is shown, save the elements and retrieve it on the mask tab in order to represents the failed elements alone and remesh it.

Note: Repeat this step until zero element, are considered to be failed, other options like smoothing can also be carried out.

Step 9: go to the 3d panel -> select tetramesh -> select elements-> simple pyramid_> give mesh

Step 10: proceed with check elements -> tet collapse, if any any elements fail. It has to be rectified manually.

Or

Step 11: go to the tetra mesh parameters-> set in the value of min and max elements size, check the fill voids, fill midvoids and smoothing.

Step 12: go to tetra remesh -> select the 2d and 3d elements-> click remesh.

The elements with errors are rectified, recheck for failed elements and repeat this step if necessary.

housing cover:

The meshed housing cover is shown below:

Repeat the above procedure of meshing the hub to this component as well.

Meshing of chassis_assembly

Step1: Open hypermesh window -> radioss

Step2: import the downloaded model.

It consists of a rotating hub, a swing arm, a steer arm and a support body.

Note:

  • The components are meshed separately in order to obtain a better mesh quality.
  • Since this is a symmetrical set of structure, one half is masked and the operation is carried out in the other half only.
  • As this is a solid component, a simple way of tetra meshing is carried out.
  • The quality criteria for elements size of this model is 6mm.

Procedure:

step 1: check for free edges in the components, confirm that the surface and the solids are enclosed

step 2: go directly to the 2d automesh-> mesh the component’s surface, with tria elements of 6mm.

step 3: go to check elements and satisfy the quality criteria.

Step 4: In the 3d panel -> select tetramesh -> volume tetra mesh-> solids -> mesh.

Note : This method can only be carried out to the 3d solid components.

It results in mesh as shown below.

All the interior solid spaces are 3d meshed.

Step 5: go to 3d panel-> check elements-> 3d -> tet collapse, if any elements fails.

Step 6: go to the tetra mesh parameters-> set in the value of min and max elements size, check the fill voids, fill midvoids and smoothing.

Step 7: go to tetra remesh -> select the 2d and 3d elements-> click remesh.

Step 8: this procedure can also be carried out manually, by adjusting the element height manually.

Meshing of cover:

A different a mesh method is followed below.

Step1: Open hypermesh window -> radioss

Step2: import the downloaded model.

Note: the topological errors are fixed and the component is meshed automatically by hypermesh itself.

Step3: Go to view-> browser-> hypermesh-> utility, a dialogue box opens.

Step4: select geom mesh-> quick tetra mesh.

It results in a different page showing the options to mesh as shown below:

Step 5: select the components-> fill in the value for min element length as 6mm-> select the surfaces as displayed -> select the option trias only.

Note: since this is a shell component with no solids, the above surfs option is selected.

Step 6: now click on mesh and hypermesh automatically rectifies the topological errors and meshes the entire component.

The mesh results in a way below shown:

Step 7: go to 3d panel-> check elements-> 3d -> tet collapse, if any elements fails.

Step 8: go to the tetra mesh parameters-> set in the value of min and max elements size, check the fill voids, fill midvoids and smoothing.

Step 9: go to tetra remesh -> select the 2d and 3d elements-> click remesh.

Step 10: this procedure can also be carried out manually, by adjusting the element height manually.
