Design and Assembly of CV Joint and Quick Return Mechanism

Objective: The aim of this report is to explain the method used for designing and assemble CV joint and quick return mechanism.

CV Joint:

Constant-velocity joints (also known as homokinetic or CV joints) are mechanical joints which allow a drive shaft to transmit power through a variable angle, at constant rotational speed, without an appreciable increase in friction or play. A common use of CV joints is in front-wheel drive vehicles, where they are used to transfer the engine's power to the wheels, even as the angle of the driveshaft varies due to the operation of the suspension.

The parts of CV Joints are:

· Vertical holding cups

· Centre shafts

· Horizontal C cups.

Procedure:

Part Creation

· First step was to create the all the different parts using the using part modelling.

· Positioned sketch command was used to create the construction elements.

· Then various commands such as pad, revolve to create the 3D parts from 2D drawings.

· Boolean operations were also used create the parts.

Assembly:

· Assembly workbench was used to create the assembly.

· First a reference point and planes were created.

· Then these reference point and planes created were fixed using the fix constraint.

· Then various parts were inserted using existing component commands.

· Then reference point and axis were created for individual components and then were published.

· Then various constrains were used to assemble the CV joint.

Quick Return Mechanism

A quick return mechanism is an apparatus to produce a reciprocating motion in which the time taken for travel in return stroke is less than in the forward stroke. It is driven by a circular motion source (typically a motor of some sort) and uses a system of links with three turning pairs and a sliding pair.

Various parts of quick return mechanism

· Slotted Link

· Pivot Block

· Sliding Block

· Crank

· Pin

· Assembly:

Same steps and rules were followed for creation of Quick return mechanism.
