Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Sphere pressing on a plate in Ansys

Objective

Perform a Sphere pressing on a plate for a displacement of 4mm and find out the plastic deformation on the plate.

Briefing

The model consists of two parts the sphere and the plate. Both parts use structural steel as material.

In order to find the plastic deformation, of the plate structural steel Non-Linear is used.

Procedure and Setup

  • Materials: Structural steel Nonlinear is assigned to the plate which is supposed to get plastically deformed by the sphere.
  • Symmetry is applied to the respective face of the sphere (helps in reducing computation time * applicable for symmetrical models))

Contact Definitions: Frictional contact is defined between sphere and plate surfaces.

Meshing: Default mesh parameters are used to mesh the model.

Boundary condition:

  • The plate is fixed at the bottom face.

  • The sphere is given displacement in this case 4mm in load steps.

Analysis Settings: Direct solver with large deflections are used to simulate this case for 4 load steps.

Results and Study

  • The maximum equivalent stress developed in the plate is 4016.9 MPa (max over the time ) and the plate has gone into plastic deformation (yield stress = 250 MPa )

  • The maximum plastic strain developed in the plate is 1.8036 mm/mm.
