Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate
Objective: To simulate sphere pressing on a plate using structural steel (Non Linear) for plate and structural steel for sphere.
Procedure for Simulation:
- Given geometry of plate and sphere is loaded in Space Claim GUI.
- Structural Steel (Non Linear) which is required for our simulation is loaded from engineering materials library
- Mechanical module is opened. Geometries are renamed as Plate and Sphere as required. Plate is assigned Structural Steel (Non Linear) material.
- Symmetry region is inserted which would simulate results for complete geometry which is symmetrical
- Frictional contact is setup between sphere and plate with a frictional co efficient of 0.74
- Complete geometry is meshed for a mesh size of 0.8 mm
- Simulation is set up for four number of steps. Solver type is set to Direct. Weak springs is set of Off and Large deflections are swtiched On.
- Bottom side of plate is fixed. Displacement of 4mm is given to top side of sphere
- Displacement is given as such after compressing sphere over plate, the sphere has to retract and reach its initial position
- After completing analysis setup as discussed above, solver is asked to solve the simulation
- It has to be ensured that, after completing solution the plate should reach plastic region in order to capture the plasticity nature of the plate
Results Discussion:
Equivalent Stress of Plate:
Maximum value- 2851.5 MPa
Minimum value- 39.122 MPa
Equivalent Stress of Sphere:
Maximum value- 482.41 MPa
Minimum value- 0.81104 MPa
Equivalent elastic strain:
Maximum value- 0.01529 MPa
Conclusion:
Sphere and plate plasticity simulation is completed and it is made sure that after compressing the plate it remains in plastic state.
