Challenge

Week 5 Sphere pressing on a plate

Sphere bending Plate Report

Aim: For this challenge, perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate.

Use Structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate must be Non-Linear.

Press the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it. The plastic deformation must be captured by you. Attach appropriate images and make a detailed report.

Procedure:

  • Select Static Structural, drag and drop into Project Schematic.
  • Choose material of as Structural Steel NL, under Engineering Data.
  • Under geometry tab, import the given sphere bending plate geometry, double-click to open Space Claim to register the model.
  • Then in Mechanical Module, assign Structural Steel NL to the plate. The sphere can remain at structural steel.
  • Assign a frictional connection between the sphere and plate with coefficient of friction = 0.74. (value taken from https://roymech.org/Useful_Tables/Tribology/co_of_frict.html)
  • Assign Symmetry to 2 faces with X-axis and Z-axis respectively.
  • The mesh size was set to default, and the sphere and plate were given 0.8mm and 0.75mm mesh sizing, respectively.
  • Under static structural tab, we set the analysis to 4 steps with auto timestep as programmed.
  • A displacement of -4mm in 2 steps is given along Y axis for the sphere, and the other 2 steps are to lift the sphere back to the initial position to prove the plate has been non-linearly deformed.
  • Directional Deformation in Z-axis, Equivalent Plastic Strain and Equivalent Stress plots are requested from the solver as outputs.
  • Equivalent Stress to prove the plate has been deform non-linearly.
  • Run the simulation by clicking on “solve”.

Conclusion:

We can see that the sphere has deformed the plate in a non-linear way. Few results are:

Max. Directional deformation along Y-Axis= 0.34305mm

Max. Strain experienced by the sphere= 4.09e-15

We can also notice,

Max. Stress experienced by the plate= 1023.1 MPa

Yield strength of Structural Steel NL = 250 MPa

1023.1>250. This proves that the plate has entered plastic region and the deformation is non-linear.
