Challenge

Sphere pressing analysis on a plate using Static structural Module

Aim:

In this challenge, we have to perform the analysis to simulate a sphere pressing on a plate by using structural steel for both sphere and plate but the material of the plate much be Non-linear. Press the sphere onto plate 4mm downwards and retract it.

Procedure:

First, we have to input the engineering materials with required properties or else by creating with required properties.

Structural steel for the sphere:

Structural steel NL for the workpiece:

Geometry:

Then we have to import into ansys, import the model, and open it in space claim so that ansys will read it and checked for any errors.

Then create symmetry on both sides of the sphere and plate to ensure the result to be a complete sphere.

Materials:

Meshing:

The sphere and plate which comes in contact has meshed with an element size of 0.7mm

The meshed model image and mesh metric graph can be seen below:

The mesh metric is utilized to identify the elements according to their quality. The quality of the mesh is acceptable as most of the elements lie within a high-quality range and an average element quality is 0.8

Contact:

The assembly is modeled in such a way that there will be a frictional contact between the Sphere and the plate.

The contact and target details are shown below

Then assign required connections in this assignment we will use frictional contact between the sphere and plate and the frictional coefficient is 0.74.

Analysis setting with fixed support and displacement.

The analysis was carried out in six steps with the same settings for each of the steps. The large deflection was enabled to account for the large deformation in the analysis.

The direct type of solver is used for the solver type in the analysis settings.

Fixed support on the Plate:

Fixed support was considered for the plate

.

Displacement on the sphere:

The sphere was given with the displacement for each time step such that it advances till it strikes the sheet metal and returns after the bending has been performed.

Result:

Total deformation on the total setup Y-axis:

The Equivalent Plastic strain of plate:

The Equivalent stress of plate:

Conclusion:

The simulation of a sphere pressing on a plate is successfully done and plastic deformation was captured with the required parameters.
